'Eight of Sweden's 277 glaciers melted completely during 2024 and are now extinct due to global warming...

Another 30 glaciers are at risk, glaciology professor Nina Kirchner said.

The extinct glaciers "won't come back in our lifetime and not if global warming continues", she said.'

Now that we know of 12 more sub glacial lake -filling and drainage events in Antarctica, the connection to the ice stream velocities or calving frequency would be very interesting…

"Thanks to... CryoSat satellite, researchers have identified 85 previously unknown lakes several kilometres under the frozen surface surrounding the South Pole. This increases the number of known active subglacial lakes below Antarctica by more than half to 231."

85 new subglacial lakes detected below Antarctica
Hidden beneath the biggest ice mass on Earth, hundreds of subglacial lakes form a crucial part of Antarctica’s icy structure, affecting the movement and stability of glaciers, and consequentially infl...

Our new paper compares GPR ice thickness data with models and looks at glacier thermal structures in Greenland, showing that thermal complexity (warm-cold ice) inside these glaciers is higher than expected.

Not the slightest accumulation zone! 🔥

As if global warming weren't causing glaciers to disappear fast enough, mining is doing it even faster! ⛏️

One more for my colleauges in #Pakistan - Temperature change in the capital #Islamabad. 😳😶‍🌫️

Although #glacier change data is sparse in Pakistan, one can just imagine the change after the year 2000. The news are filled with #GLOFs #Floods 🌊 and Erosion…

On Svalbard, rain falls where snow once lay.

The white patches of ice and snow slip away, leaving the mountains darker, bare, and heavy with melt.

What once gleamed now fades—a stark reminder of a world warming too quickly.

Annual mass balance survey with AG-315 UNIS students at upper Foxfonna near Longyearbyen. Even after last summer’s record heat, ~1 m of ice was lost at 550–600 masl.

Sad views from southern #Svalbard 30.8.25 - melt has reached high up the mountains. From Hornsund to Amundsenisen barely any snow left… how should glaciers build mass like this? Svalbard is heating fast. Only steep mountain walls seem to help accumulate a bit and catch blown snow 📸from✈️

I was shocked when I first saw these results from standard climate models used in IPCC reports: for high emissions, the Atlantic overturning circulation #AMOC shuts down in all 9 models that ran past 2100, and is well on the way to shutdown by 2100.
Our paper on that is out today.🧵
