The Sankei sent a reporter to investigate why Yamata no Orochi playground equipment had been built in a Tokyo suburban park in 1990.

Spoiler: no one knew (seriously)

My next book recommendation for #MythologyMonday is anything by Zack Davisson (@zackdavisson.com). The Ultimate Guide to Japanese Yokai is a thorough intro to yokai, Yurei is a great book about Japanese ghosts, Kaibyo is possibly my favourite yokai book, and Zack translated Strange Japanese Yokai.
Three books by Zack Davisson as listed in the post above, and one book by Kenji Murakami that Zack translated.

A school bathroom! A terrible fate😰

the ghost Hanako of the Toilet haunts the 3rd stall of the 3rd floor girls bathroom of Japanese schools. Knock on the stall door and say “Hanako-san, are you there?” -- or maybe don't do that, because if she's there she'll pull you into the toilet and kill you! #folklorethursday art @yokai.com
looking into a bathroom staff with the door partly open. a traditional Japanese squat toilet (terrifying on its own :D ) is seen, and a young girl with a scary look on her face is peering around the door out of the shadows

Ushirogami is a one-eyed ghost that sneaks up behind you and pulls your hair or makes your umbrella blow away or breathes on the back of your neck...then disappears when you turn around. #FolkloreThursday

At ghost story parties in old Edo, 100 candles were lit and one was blown out for each story told. It was said that - if you dared to go that far - a real ghost called Ao Andon would appear out of the smoke of the 100th candle. #folklorethursday art by @yokai.com

Everything can come to monstrous life in Japan, even vegetables! In one legend, a pumpkin monster called Sunamura no onryō appeared in the neighborhood of Sunamura night after night, terrorizing people by chasing them around yokai.com/sunamuranoon... #FolkloreThursday
