My next book recommendation for #MythologyMonday is anything by Zack Davisson (@zackdavisson.com). The Ultimate Guide to Japanese Yokai is a thorough intro to yokai, Yurei is a great book about Japanese ghosts, Kaibyo is possibly my favourite yokai book, and Zack translated Strange Japanese Yokai.

Three books by Zack Davisson as listed in the post above, and one book by Kenji Murakami that Zack translated.

the ghost Hanako of the Toilet haunts the 3rd stall of the 3rd floor girls bathroom of Japanese schools. Knock on the stall door and say “Hanako-san, are you there?” -- or maybe don't do that, because if she's there she'll pull you into the toilet and kill you! #folklorethursday art @yokai.com

Ubume is the ghost of a woman who died in childbirth. She asks passerby to carry her infant and when someone agrees, the child grows heavier with every step till the good samaritan is crushed beneath its weight. #FolkloreThursday

At ghost story parties in old Edo, 100 candles were lit and one was blown out for each story told. It was said that - if you dared to go that far - a real ghost called Ao Andon would appear out of the smoke of the 100th candle. #folklorethursday art by @yokai.com
