Over the past week, protests outside The Bell Hotel, housing asylum seekers, escalated into violence. While locals raised legitimate worries, far-right agitators hijacked the demonstrations. ❗

Here’s what happened, who’s behind it, and why it matters.

Our Director @youngbridget.bsky.social is quoted in this @bigissue.com article about the further extension to the move-on period.

The extension doesn't go far enough, but provides a valuable opportunity to make the case for a permanent extension to 56 days.

Read now:
Home Office extends 56-day 'move-on' period for refugees
The trial 56-day 'move-on' period for newly-recognised refugees to find somewhere to live has been extended, the government has confirmed.

Thoroughly recommend a marbled pot plant making workshop followed by a walk on the beach at Whitley Bay as an excellent team building day!

The @naccomnetwork.bsky.social team definitely benefited from some relaxed and creative time together. And always good to get some sand between your toes!

Privileged to represent @naccomnetwork.bsky.social at the #UKCovid19Inquiry Housing and Homelessness roundtable, as part of the Module 10 investigation into the impact of the pandemic on the UK population.

Key lesson: We need to build better foundations and make the systemic changes needed now.

Worrying developments in asylum decision making
freemovement.bsky.social
Overall grant rate has fallen to 49% for y/e March 2025. Practitioners (including me) have been raising serious concerns about the extremely poor quality of these decisions, and these cases will now move into tribunal backlog instead, mostly unassisted by lawyers due to legal aid crisis.

@naccomnetwork.bsky.social response to the idea of “return hubs”.

In a nutshell: Focus on making the asylum and immigration system more effective, efficient and fair rather than inhumane and expensive performative politics. And remember there are people at the centre of all this.

"As part of NACCOM, we join together and make far more difference than we do on our own, even though on our own we make a difference too"

An honour to have Dave Smith at our Annual Conference today, 10 years since NACCOM's founding as a charity.

ICYMI👇🏻 Last week @naccomnetwork.bsky.social published a blog reminding us that while a huge amount of attention has rightly and understandably been given to the challenges faced by refugees leaving the asylum estate, we cannot forget the experiences of those initially refused asylum.
naccomnetwork.bsky.social
Our new blog explores the situation facing people caught in the asylum appeals backlog, and the potential for a second homelessness crisis amongst those leaving the asylum estate, which could have dire consequences for individuals, communities, and local services. ⬇️
