He had told her years ago his eyes had been blue once, though he had forgotten it for a time. Now, his pupil-engulfed irises eyed her with the same lasciviousness of his grin as he stood before her stark naked. Are some pulled to it for power? Maybe, but they're not power-hungry," she regurgitated the phrase with pure vitriol, "because they're vampires. Most aren't. Most keep the fact they're a vampire quiet-and not only with tarras. They don't tend to be the most social people," she finished with a mutter. "Why not?" Emily was genuinely curious. She hoped it was evident and Tam would be willing to answer-without making things worse. Judging by the way the woman's expression contorted more, it made things worse. Tashi & Ansel have siblings! Tashi’s forged fam sibs, Tam & Arin, both play prominent roles, while Ansel’s are left to backstory in Book 1 but will make appearances in Book 2 👀

Tashi worries Tam & Arin are too kind-hearted for their own good. She’ll never admit it’s what she loves most about them…
She knew it had to have broken Ansel’s heart to put his foot down with Tam. Tam had been one more stray he had taken to like she was his own child—just like Arin. As if I have room to talk. Tashi knew she and her adoptive guardian were more alike than she would ever admit out loud. Tam and Arin were as much her siblings as they were her friends. Had Tashi been born a witch, she would have followed in Ansel’s footsteps as a guardian of the coven, regardless of what kind of magic her hypothetical self might have inherited. Black-and-white moments of his childhood stretched back to the year before they moved to Eavandale, the oldest in Avignon. Ansel was all of five, gripping a three-year-old Luce’s hand, their father with a hand on a shoulder apiece, and their mother cradling Cyrille in her arms, not yet a year. A Gothic fortress-palace loomed behind them—L'Académie des Deux Étoiles. The building itself, along with the cathedral on the left edge of the photograph, was from an era when Christians were more numerous in the sanguine world, though by no means was their population substantial. Reality—and no doubt cost—caught up with them. Their mimicry of its tarra counterpart halted with the Palais Vieux, a scarcely begun addition on the right edge.
