My hometown, and it’s upper/middle fairly red, lot of retired and current military, with Navy military housing in town too. People were shocked when this happened. A lot of “I didn’t vote for this” on the Cam FB pages. A lot of eyes were opened that day.

Don’t have time to find it now, but there was a study done sometime in the last 10 years that showed that medical doctors that majored in non-science degrees had better bedside manner and had higher patient satisfaction scores, than science/premed majors.

Of the admins is bad. I get the parents. We’re conditioned to job track. That’s one of the worst parts of US culture - so job centric. We need to move beyond and learn how to live real lives. We’d all be so much happier

I should add that I get it. We want the best for our kids, but the stumbling around we did made a lot of us better people. If not better, we at least have interesting stories to tell at parties.

This makes me sad. I learned so many interesting things in my “filler” classes that have helped me see the world in different ways. Someone who wants to be in Criminology should be someone who wants to understand people. Poetry, religion, sociology, art etc are all ways to learn how to see the world

One of my best friends majored in French and English Literature, she’s an amazing OB-GYN now. And her French helped her Spanish.

The world is literally their oyster. But parents want to lock that stuff down and want guaranteed career tracts and not a child with critical thinking skills that can do just about anything they want.

The careers that have an actual required tract like engineering, accounting, and most scientific lab/research jobs.
A Liberal Arts maj can get a masters in just about anything. They can go to med school, law school, get a teaching credential, work at a million different white collar job beyond sales
