I'm awaiting an important package from UPS. It should've arrived yesterday. They said my address doesn't exist. We confirmed the address and were told it would arrive today. The same thing happened.

Now they say I can collect it in-store, except it'll arrive on 08.17.25 – a date that doesn't exist.

The plausible outcome, however, is of course "I will be a servant."

The subtext of ‘we should be more like Dubai’, beyond the obvious racism, is ‘I should have a servant’.

Huge fan of short books (academic or not). Basically I am 10x as likely to have time to read it carefully if it's <200 pages.

Somehow I missed that one. Though I do try to miss anything Bob Dylan related post-1975

The question isn't whether they're popular across the public as a whole, but whether they idea of them is popular enough among enough voters in the right constituencies to regain some seats (or, in the minds of more optimistic Tories, a majority). That doesn't seem too implausible to me.

It's so annoying how pretty much any automated digital process gets labelled as AI these days

I cancelled my Netflix subscription like a week ago and now I get like 2 emails a day begging me to come back. Oddly satisfying feeling.

Peer-reviewing an article: "Why is this an article, and not a book?"

I am unbelievably pleased and excited by this idea.

I don't really have anything specific to offer because IMO the HREotGN is more omnipresent than the (Ancient) Roman Empire, just below the surface. I suppose what I find striking is how it gets cut out of e.g. pop representations of the Tudors.

Once again, a huge and potentially disastrous disconnect between the government (who think of immigration in terms of finessing statistics) and the far right (who just don't want to be around people who are different from them).

Under Labour's plan, I wouldn't qualify for my ILR because I spent the first five years on my work visa in a new career, where I spent most of my time [checks notes] educating young adults.

Had to do this recently while visiting. It took a selfie and told me "you're clearly an adult, absolutely 0 reason for proper confirmation whatsoever" and honestly I think I'd have preferred my private data harvested by some malign techbro than that.

But also: he might not profit directly, but I'm sure he'd like the reputation of free universal science fiction healthcare. And even if it only convinces a handful of people, they might help swing 2028 for his successor (hopefully not him) who would, presumably, aim to benefit him financially.

I normally tend towards the "he knows what he's doing (but evil)" end of the "he knows what he's doing (but evil)" to "he's completely lost (also evil)" spectrum, but I do wonder if he hasn't convinced himself this is real and something he actually did.

I'll be there until October 2026, it looks like. :)

(After that who knows 🙃🥲🫠)

Ditto if you're in Turin at all!

I’ve really not made as much use of the libraries as I probably should… Either way let me know when you’re next in town – I’d be very happy to get a coffee!

(I have complex feelings about Turin in large part because getting residence, into the healthcare system, etc. has been so arduous, but also agree Florence itself is kinda overhyped. Keen to see more of Tuscany though.)

Unfortunately not in Turin. Yet another reason for me to get out of Piedmont, I guess!

You mean the guy who dramatically and devastatingly expanded PFIs? Who stopped asylum seekers from working, making it inevitable they would be put up in shoddy, overpriced accommodation at huge public expense, forming the background to the current wave of Reform-to-Robinson street bigotry? That guy?

I can think of quite a lot of thoughtful, principled conservatives in my field who these guys would instantly pillory for not supporting white supremacist plutocracy

Re-watching Jane the Virgin and a) it's bonkers some people said this show was conservative when it came out and b) glad to report my original judgment (both Michael and Rafael suck) is still correct.
