When I'm doing something like a comic, each panel gets its own folder with the aforementioned layouts. I'll then add universal layers atop those for things like the header and page count.

It's a similar concept for my rendered pieces. I used to have different layers for each color block, but have kept them on a single layer as I've grown in confidence. As @mhudson-illustration.com said, a lot of effects will get their own layer.

I have to label everything because I'm anal.

The sumi-e style I've been working with is simplest.

In the Pragmata piece, I have two "pencils" layers. The first is my rough sketch of the general shapes and the "pencils 2" layer refines it. "Inks" get dumped on top, and since I've cleared space for the text, I joined the two.
