The greatest loss of human life on open water in the known history of the Great Lakes. Gale was involved but the schooner Augusta rammed the Lady Elgin. This horrific sinking resulted in sailing ships being required to have running lights

Lake Michigan, 165 years ago today

300 perish in the sinking of the Lady Elgin steamship. The majority were Irish Americans from Milwaukee on their way home from Chicago.

It was the greatest loss of life on open water in the history of the Great Lakes.
