OpenAl launches its agent Hands on with Operator - a promising but frustrating new frontier for artificial intelligence How you feel about Operator will depend heavily on what you hope to get out of it. If you're looking for a polished virtual assistant to which you can confidently hand off shopping and research tasks, I suspect you'll be disappointed: at the moment, using Operator is significantly slower, more frustrating, and more expensive than simply doing any of these tasks yourself. If you're interested in the bleeding edge of Al progress, though, and want to get a sense of what the future could look like, Operator offers a compelling demonstration. Using it on Thursday reminded me a bit of the first time I took a ride in one of Google's self driving cars: half-baked though the product may have been at the time, it also represented an extraordinary technological achievement and seemed likely to shape our world for years to come. My most frustrating experience with Operator was my first one: trying to order groceries. "Help me buy groceries on Instacart," I said, expecting it to ask me some basic questions. Where do I live? What store do I usually buy groceries from? What kinds of groceries do I want? It didn't ask me any of that. Instead, Operator opened Instacart in the browser tab and begin searching for milk in grocery stores located in Des Moines, lowa. At that point, I told Operator to buy groceries from my local grocery store in San Francisco. Operator then tried to enter my local grocery store's address as my delivery address.

I am going insane. This company will lose $10bn this year! Generative AI has peaked! There isn't a sustainable business model, and the products are mediocre and error prone and don't even do anything cool despite costing billions and accelerating climate change and stealing everybody's artwork!

I've been hesitant to outright say that we're in an artificial intelligence bubble, or at least I was until I read that Microsoft and OpenAI are currently planning to build a $100 billion supercomputer dubbed "Stargate." The six-year-long project is contingent on "OpenAI's ability to meaningfully improve the capabilities of its AI" according to The Information's sources, and would require "as much as five gigawatts of power." To give context, one gigawatt is enough to power 750,000 homes. The Information's story is vague about the progress required to launch Stargate — it's a multi-phase operation, currently "in the middle" of its third phase, adding that the datacenter would potentially cost $10 billion to build, and that half of the $100 billion total cost could be made up of specialist AI chips. The article is vague, likely because building Stargate is at this point somewhat theoretical. Microsoft allegedly has to find new ways to fit more GPUs (the graphics process unit that is used in AI compute) in a single rack (the way that servers are mounted in a datacenter), and find an entirely new way of cooling them to make Stargate run. It would also need to source enough energy to power an entire city.

Closed captions and subtitles aren't the same thing.

Sometimes "subtitles" describes either a translation OR a transcription of English audio, but "closed captions" can't be used interchangeably that way. They're only for the spoken audio (i.e. English dubs) and feature sound effect descriptions.
