The basic conceptual problem with BEFORE WATCHMEN is that what makes the characters interesting is WATCHMEN.
Without the changes they go through in WATCHMEN they're pretty much just types. WATCHMEN implies that the adventures Nite-Owl had in his earlier career were just bog-standard Batman stories.
