Lots of research has examined the effects of mindfulness, including in relationships, generally showing benefits. This study shows that one way that mindfulness can shape relationships is by reducing men's tendency to overestimate their partner's negative emotions during difficult conversations. 4/5

But we found important individual differences: more mindful people, especially men, were less likely to overestimate their partner's anger, meaning that mindfulness helped men perceive their partner's emotions more realistically. 3/5

In two studies, couples came to the lab and engaged in a conversation about an issue in their relationship. We then asked each partner how angry & upset they felt, and how angry & upset they thought their partner felt. On average, people tend to overestimate their partner's negative emotions. 2/5
