“If it hits you, it’s just not your day.”

90% of people struck by lightning survive but many have lifelong injuries. We still see around 20 deaths from lightning every year in the U.S.

We’ve seen 5 deaths in the U.S. in September alone.

Being struck by lightning isn’t a minor thing. We shouldn’t be making light of safety measures.

We estimate than 10 people are impacted when someone is struck by lightning (friends, relatives, coworkers).

For the ~200 people who are struck each year in the U.S., that means 2,000 more people are impacted in some way - from losing a loved one or having to care for them long term.

The U.S. used to have 400-500 lightning fatalities a year. Globally, we see 24,000 fatalities a year from lightning - many of them occurring at sporting events.

Really shameful to see this on Big Noon Kickoff.

Two hunters and their dogs in Florida were killed by lightning on Monday September 22. These are now 3 fatalities in Florida this year.

Four hunters have died this month due to lightning strikes, and there are now 19 lightning fatalities in the U.S. for 2025.

Incredible +CG flash!! Negative leaders propagate right to left incloud, then a positive leader develops downward from the decaying negative leader causing a +CG return stroke. Positive leaders with recoil leaders visible below cloud base following the return stroke.

Things got pretty intense in the South Dakota Badlands last night. 60+ mph winds rolled a camping trailer at the boondock. Here is an image of 1st responders rushing to the scene with lightning still hammering the area.
30 second exposure (3x 10 sec) with multiple lightning strikes in the background and red and blue lights from a 1st responder vehicle as it races to the Badlands boondock where high winds rolled a camping trailer.

Outstanding captures of bolt-from-the-blue lightning flashes by Dan Robinson @stormhighway.bsky.social showing the negative end of the bipolar leader typically exits the upper positive charge region and travels to ground outside the storm causing a -CG return stroke. www.youtube.com/watch?v=8r1c...

If you’re going golfing, stay aware of the weather and head for the clubhouse if you hear thunder - golf carts and most golf shelters are unsafe!

Golf courses should have lightning warning systems based on lightning detection that automatically trigger when lightning is nearby.

Camping locations near rivers often have really bad reception. Your cell phone should alert for a Flash Flood Warning, if you haven't gone in and disabled it.

This isn't about forecasts and warnings, it is about communication and action.

Deadly flooding in the flash flood alley of Texas is raising questions about warnings. Here's a preliminary (but not conslusive) analysis.

There have been claims that NOAA/NWS did not foresee catastrophic TX floods--but that's simply not true. This was undoubtedly an extreme event, but messaging rapidly escalated beginning ~12 hrs prior. Flood Watch mid PM, "heads up" outlook late PM, flash flood warnings ~1am.

WPC issued as many as six MPDs for the deadly flash flooding in the TX Hill Country starting yesterday evening and lasting through much of today. The first MPD generally set the stage for what was to come, while the next three shown were as the event unfolded.

About 4,000 lightning strikes in OR and WA yesterday, which led to 41 new fires in OR & 17 in WA. Nothing big so far, but look for more initial attack fires today, particularly east of the Cascades. More dry lightning expected over central OR this PM with acute hot/dry conditions on Wednesday.

Trying to figure out what type of Transient Luminous Event this was over North Dakota on the night of 6/20. Recorded at 24 fps, each image is 42 ms exposure. Sony A7iv, 85mm, f/2, ISO 51,200. Doesn't look like typical sprite or a typical gigantic jet. Thoughts? Captured two during a 2 hour period.

Our recent solar flare research was published! We present the first spectral observations of ‘Supra-Arcade Downflows’ (SADs) since 2003. SADs are dark finger-like downflows seen above solar flare loops, but their origins remain elusive! What do we find? 1/6

There's been a huge decrease in lightning fatalities since 1940. A lot of this is because so many people work indoors now.

Improvements to lightning awareness, detection, and education have helped lower casualties in the last 25 years, but the significant reduction comes from societal changes.
