I really wanted to make it feel like Mt. Chimney had been raised from the 2D plane of ORAS into the 3D world. I hope y'all appreciated the vision and all the work that went into this. This project was a testament to everyone's strengths and creativity on the team.

Once we had the framework set up and ref/inspo aligned, I set to work trying my best to make it like what we saw above! In hindsight, I wish I played with scale SO much more. I used tricks to help, but I think having the mountain at 10x scale would've helped a lot for intensity.

2D art that lived in a 3D world, intentional camera placement that had simple motivated moves, and a lot of post-processing. If you want to know how Octopath did theirs, I recc this video of the dev team diving into what their post processing was like! buff.ly/lDeEvmB

For the 3D aspect, it was back to the drawing board on style. Color space would be harder to manage due to our skillsets, but what if we recreated a look that blended the two spaces together? I instantly thought of Octopath and how its presentation made 2.5D always feel EMOTIONAL

We wanted to play with space a lot; to give innate direction of the character always looking up at the summit, or the camera looking down waiting for him to fall. Something that After Effects 2D explainers didn't really give room for. So we thought, why not 3D??

I'm getting lofty with a lot of this, but like, these were the question I & the others needed to explore/answer for how we'd portray this rollercoaster. This pre-vis is REAL rough, but it helped me explore the inspirations we liked that told the story and how we could twist it.

If we went with the mountain framework, we could draw inspiration from Journey and Celeste. Both do GREAT work in making the mountain's peak an unquestionable objective, something you NATURALLY just feel pulled to. But at the same time, have this tension and anxiety baked in.

BobbyBroccoli's MoGraph work was also a great reference, but the idea focused too much on zooming out/zooming in, and we wanted to give moments that kept people in the emotional space. That's when I went digging and pitched something I thought would be real cool

Originally, we went through a couple different framings! At first we thought of the run as a house of cards, and I played with the idea of "trying to pull 331 correct cards in a row" like the 331 battles we had to face.

In total, I rendered 12m15s of animation for this. Compared to the 3.5 hour runtime, it's nothing! On it's own though, it's a full video interlaced through the project to help emphasize the journey of exploring self worth and the never ending challenges that come with it.
