Swiss reject mandatory community service

Swiss voters rejected a proposal to replace male conscription with mandatory community service for men and women in a referendum, opponents saying it would create more problems than it solved.
The government opposed it and I'm sure the wealthy in Switzerland were able to campaign effectively through the media and otherwise... but at the end of the day the proposal commanded less than 20% support.

Today, Swiss voters will vote on two nation-wide referendums (popular initiatives):
▪️on replacing compulsory military service with a civic duty extended to women ( #ServiceCitoyen)
▪️on introducing an inheritance tax ( #Erbschaftssteuer) for the very rich
to fund measures to fight climate change
