According to Sky sports Italy Grassl considered not competing in the men's figure skating long programme in view of severe gastrointestinal problems. He spoke of "food poisoning". The event was marred by many errors, including the shocker defeat of superstar I. Malinin

The other angle in the story was the opinion among skating fans like myself that only a perfect Kagiyama, or a charging Sato, could deny a less than perfect Malinin. No one saw Shaidorov coming. He wasn’t supposed to be the story. Yet somehow, the skating gods aligned perfectly for him.

Absolutely *wild* men’s free tonight. Don’t know what happened out there, but thrilled to see Gogolev skate so well. On the heels of a such a beautiful skate from Piper and Paul, this has been a great games for Canadian figure skaters so far!
On a night filled with mistakes all over the ice, with many men’s figure skaters wondering what might have been, Canada’s Stephen Gogolev delivered a personal best performance.

The 21-year-old met the moment every time he took to the Olympic ice.

And he finished 5th.
