This from @FT is consistent with my earlier tweets- but less angry. Can’t get over how extraordinarily, embarrassingly mathematically illiterate this #ALevelsResults algorithm shit is. Anyone with any experience of data would spot these flaws #GavinMustGo....

Ultimately we ABSOLUTELY have to move away from the current culture of digital exceptionalism and technological determinism. Just because data and algorithms operate in the 'infosphere' doesn't mean they don't have tangible impacts #IRL #ALevelsResults

To be clear stand-alone principles aren't the answer. But there have to be mechanisms in place that prompt thoughts of 'what if...' that are flexible enough to allow contextual adaptation, but have enough bite that people can't 'ethics wash' or 'ethics shop.' #ALevelsResults

Crucially impact analysis MUST be done at the group & societal level of abstraction not individual level. Algorithms operate in assemblages and there are knock-on effects that aren't obvious if we only consider will x hurt person y #ALevelsResults

This mess was OBVIOUS to all interested in statistics, big data analytics, data & digital ethics and more. Nobody listened. There was nothing adding friction to the process from idea to deployment. We need regular analysis of impact not a one-off sign off point #ALevelsResults

This level of chaos wasn't necessary. We need to move to a model of ethical foresight analysis & pro-ethical design, supported by the law. There must be a framework that helps people, insts, govs etc. work out what they can do & evaluate what they SHOULD do. #ALevelsResults
