This was in the period that the abolition of slavery in the Netherlands was the subject of discussion, while other countries already abolished slavery. And in 1900 the character was changed into the Black Pete that we know today and as Dr. Hoving has said "This was backlash against the abolition of slavery and the emancipation of African and Afro-Caribbean people. An aggressive white response, to prevent equality and emancipation."

oh yeah absolutely and as someone who grew up there, i can tell you it was hell....i started #AbolishSinterklaas a few years ago (one of the stickers on my laptop) because i argue that the whole holiday should be abolished, instead of just 'changing' the appearance of Pete, to appease the whites

a few of them got beaten up before we moved in that neighbourhood back in the 90s, so they were afraid to do it on that route lol.
