#Afrofuturism
African writers are producing science fiction and fantasy self-consciously rooted in the continent, rather than its diaspora.
Kingsley Charles explores what sets Africanfuturism apart from Afrofuturism.
The Rise of a Distinctly African Speculative Fiction
The continent’s writers and directors are separating their sci-fi and fantasy from the diaspora focus of Afrofuturism

If anyone is planning to visit Philly before September 6th, she has an exhibit titled Ruth E. Carter: Afrofuturism in Costume Design at the African-American Museum on 7th & Arch St!

Indigenous futurism and Afrofuturism are seeds for hope. They are writing about resistance in the future and actively work against colonialism to broaden our imagination. Cyberpunk is uniquely dystopian. The corpos have won. But why? We discussed that what we create impacts the real world.

All this. Still.
If I don't say it, no one will. Thankfully, I have a big mouth.

Thanks to the work of Nicole Furtado, I taught my students about Indigenous Futurism and its connection to Afrofuturism, the fetishistic treatment of Asian cultures in cyberpunk, and the connection between California missions, oppression in Oceania, Japanese internment, Slavery and the Holocaust. ✨

I don't know Dr. Okorafor or speak for them, I am simply a fan of their work.

Here is their post explaining the difference between AFRICANfuturism and Afrofuturism. You don't need to understand something in order to be respectful or kind.

Get another look at Relooted, the Africanfuturist heist game where you plan for high-risk missions. The targets? Real African artifacts, like the Cameroonian Bangwa Queen and the Ghanaian Asante Gold Mask.

Relooted launches February 10.

i have no deeper or profound reasoning beyond finding great joy in depictions of african culture in fantasy media, and a deep feeling that i would find the entire storyline of the Ancients/the Ascians much more palatable if it were a variation of afrofuturism

(squishing my cat’s little face insistently between my big stupid hands) solarpunk afrofuturism
Electric vehicles with off-grid solar are competitive with or cheaper than old style petrol/gaslone vehicles in many African countries before 2030; and cheaper in all countries by 2040 - often by a wide margin. That's even allowing for (high) financing costs. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Please please please stop calling what I do afrofuturism. It is NOT. It is africanfuturism and the distinction MATTERS GODDAMMIT. I can't remain civil about this much longer and I shouldn't be expected to. 🤬

Even saddling The Space Cat with the afrofuturism label is diabolical.
