While I would certainly these days be more judicious who I shared and discussed with these days, my heart remains unchanged.

What remains most important to me creatively is the ability to provide others a way to ignite their own fire.

Back when I used to write poetry non-stop, I loved when people would read something and I could ask them what they thought it was about. I would shut up and not correct them or give my actual thoughts.

Their interpretation was its own form of poetry.

But what humbles and delights me about making games is knowing I am providing people with keys to open the doors of their own imaginations.

'Evocative economy' is about games using the minimum, most powerful words and structures to create platforms for people to create their own stories, their own moments.

There are many ways to go about it.
gamefiend.bsky.social
And to that end, less is *always* more.

This isn't a rant about games needing to be short or long, dont get it twisted; not every game needs to be a lyrically written or small.

The goal of games and poems is *not* to create an explosion for others to witness, but to provide the oxygen and spark for others to create an explosion within themselves.
gamefiend.bsky.social
The considerations and output for games and poems are quiet different, but what links them in my thoughts and my praxis is this:

Both games and poems utilize evocative economy, doing as much with as little to create a large effect in others.

Fun fact, I used to write a lot of poetry, but moved away from it during college. Ive always loved tabletop game design, and it has taken me a loooong time to loop around and connect that love of games with my love for poetry.

It was strange, being a receiver catching this mysterious signal in the middle of the night, but... I'm not mad at it!

As long as it lets me sleep after, I am good lol

I woke up in the middle of the night with the first two lines of this poem repeating in my head. I couldn't sleep until I wrote it on my phone.

I fell asleep almost immediately after I finished.
During a Quiet Moment

How brightly shines the pale light of hope
Underneath the canopy of loss?
This bone, this mind, this gristle
Mingles and lingers in a sea of fallen pine leaves
(A chorus of once evergreen angels now at rest)

Tossing and turning in the night, these words
Trace the dreaming winds, whispering
Curl your hand behind your ear
Listen as they say:

The impossible is merely another name
for yesterday
A chasm we daily cross

Ok. I GET IT.

Please let me enjoy my thing. Its like, the only time I've really been on socials in like, 2 weeks and I want to express my enjoyment of something.

I respect that you have an issue with it, but *I* don't want to have to hold it right now.
gamefiend.bsky.social
I mean, I get what you are saying but I have watched a TON of anime including Fairy Tail and Black Clover, and none of these characters resemble them on more than a surface level.

I think you're just going to have to let me enjoy this one, bc i don't see where we can go from here?

So, I am at episode 28 of Frieren and impatiently waiting until January (not going to skip ahead in manga, enjoying the ride!).
My spoiler-free analysis:

Frieren seems like a show about magic, but it is actually a love letter to humanity.
gamefiend.bsky.social
Idk, I see it completely opposite. I feel they took the typical shonen conceits and built up an interesting ensemble of characters and personalities.
gamefiend.bsky.social
That somehow seems too long away!
gamefiend.bsky.social
Oh I am here at 28 loving it
gamefiend.bsky.social
The magic first class trials are so damn good. I think I love the last one the most?!?! Such a great summation of everyone.
gamefiend.bsky.social
Frieren is SO fucking good

Black Americans will always find joy even when the world around us is burning.

And where joy can’t be found, we create it.

That’s one thing they keep trying to take from us and it pisses them off that they can’t.

Ok, putting my blockers on, will not be back on until this afternoon!

Don't forget: Imagination is for Everyone.
gamefiend.bsky.social
Lol. To be honest, I completely conflate these two in my mind.
