Where are we?” she dared to ask. “Hiding place,” her captor said, sounding almost proud of himself. “I gathered as much. Where did all this stuff come from? Was it already here?” “This place was once used for underground, illegal medical procedures,” W-044 said. “Equipment was already here upon arrival. This unit decided to…not look a gift horse in the mouth.” “This place has anesthetics but no painkillers?” W-044 shook his head. “Medicines were picked clean. Likely sold on black market. The anesthetics this unit has access to were provided by handler for use on missions.” “Delightful,” Erin muttered, less afraid of the assassin by the minute. “This unit made use of what medical equipment was left behind to perform field surgery on Erin Raincrow,” he said, sounding pleased with himself. So… he didn’t patch her up on the way here. If she managed to survive, then they didn’t go very far. She’d already lost enough blood to faint, which was bad enough. She would have certainly needed a transfusion. How had he managed? There was no way any blood abandoned in a place like this would still be viable. She looked down at her arm, bandaged up at the crook of her elbow. “Whose blood did you give me?” “All Artificial Combat Units were created with O-negative blood types for maximum efficiency,” W-044 said. “Erin Raincrow’s AB-positive blood type was helpful in this instance, but unnecessary.” Erin almost rolled her eyes. Unnecessary, he said. “What do you plan to do now?” W-044 actually frowned. “This unit did not consider things past this current point.”

Erin couldn’t hold the gun still. She was going to be sick. “Is anything we’re working on here actually what it’s supposed to be…or is everything a front? The chemotherapy drugs Patricia’s team is working on? The new strain of rice from Carter’s?” “What can I tell you, my dear?” Tim sighed like he was speaking to a toddler. “Trance Corp doesn’t produce failures, just steppingstones to success. Just because you don’t like what we sell doesn’t mean it’s not profitable.” She inhaled deeply, lowering the gun. “You’re right…” Tim’s smile returned. How had she never noticed it didn’t reach his eyes? “I knew you’d underst—” Erin fired two shots into Tim’s thighs, glaring down at him as he collapsed screaming to the floor. “I don’t like what you’re selling.”

“You’re older than I expected,” she murmured. He snorted, turning back to the road with a wry smirk. “You have no idea, sunshine.” “Erin,” she corrected him. “I know you know my name.” “I do,” he agreed. “But I don’t know yours.” “Told you. I don’t have one.” She frowned, popping open the can of coffee. It smelled strongly of caramel. “You had to have been called something.” There was a long moment of silence between them. Now that the mask was gone, she could see the way his jaw worked as he considered things, like he was literally chewing on his thoughts. She settled back into the wide passenger seat, slightly angled so she wasn’t quite facing him, but also wasn’t not facing him. She took a sip of the coffee. He was right. It wasn’t any worse than the stuff she got at work. “J-097.” She froze with the can halfway to her mouth for a second sip. “I’m sorry?” “J-097,” he repeated. “That was my designation. Clone series J, number ninety-seven.” Erin’s jaw went slack, but her hands went tight, denting the can and sloshing some of the coffee out onto her skirt. She couldn’t bring herself to care at the moment. “You’re a Minuteman.” Minutemen – Erin was fairly certain their official name were ‘Artificial Combat Units,’ but no one called them that outside of government officials and the military contractors that made them – were introduced during the early years of the War as a solution to the many large, loud protests against the potential drafting of civilians. No need for a draft when you could grow a platoon of soldiers in a matter of months, training preprogrammed into their brains and everything. It was a miracle of modern science. The program was decommissioned after the Treaty of Philadelphia was signed at the end of the War. No one asked what happened to the clones that remained.

Chae-seo flicked the towel in his direction, the hit only making Chris laugh, his head tipping back and a hand going up to his chest. “Go on,” she challenged, taking on a facsimile of Marley’s barely-hanging-on Southern twang. “Git.” He beat a hasty retreat out the back door, and Erin could hear Anthony hollering at him, though she couldn’t make out the words exactly. Chae-seo huffed, hands on her hips and looking pleased with herself. “You’re so comfortable with each other already,” Erin pointed out, awed but a little uncertain. “He makes it easy,” Chae-seo admitted. “He’s…charming.” Erin nodded slowly. “He said his series was built for espionage. He…he said Jack was pretty enough to be a ‘doll’ like him.” Something crossed Chae-seo’s face. Something Erin couldn’t quite read. “Well,” she said after a time, turning to Erin with a tight smile. “That would explain it.” “Jack doesn’t seem to think he’s here to spy on us,” Erin said quickly, a sense of guilt making itself at home in her ribcage. “No,” Chae-seo agreed. “I didn’t get that sense either. Charming’s just…his default. Probably doesn’t know how to be anything else.” “Charming’s not a bad thing to be.” Chae-seo smiled again, a little more natural this time. “No. It’s not.”

Erin wasn’t sure what was worse: the waiting or the not knowing. She sat in the driver’s seat, watching the loading docks in the rearview mirror. She had no way to communicate with Jack and the others. Her phone didn’t work outside the very limited region of phone towers the Oregon State engineers set up, and Chris and Anthony hadn’t exactly brought radios with them when the left the mercenary company. So, all she could do was sit. And wait. A sound reached her ears, high pitched and whining in a way that made her brows twitch. She turned over her shoulder, squinting at the loading dock. Nothing. Nothing she could see anyway. She turned to open the door, but just as she did, she heard something else. “Stay in the truck!” Her head snapped up, and she saw Anthony gunning it towards her with a hovercart piled high with crate upon crate of Universal Component. Probably more than she could use in a lifetime. Behind him, Jack and Chris were running and gunning. Behind them was a small army of security bots. “What happened?!” Erin shouted, backing up the truck so Anthony could basically push the cart into the bed. It wouldn’t be secure, but it’d be faster than trying to move the crates between the two. “I thought you said they were blind to us!” “Blind and deaf,” Anthony agreed, and Erin had never heard one of the super soldiers sound breathless before. “But Chris can’t fuckin’ drive, apparently. Bumped into one of them with the cart.” He scoffed at the man. “Some spy.” “I said I was sorry!” Chris shouted over his shoulder, laying down cover fire as Jack and Anthony jumped into the truck bed with the crates.

He ducked his head with a soft laugh, that beautiful, boyish smile tugging at the corners of his lips. She stole that smile with another kiss. Wandering hands left trails of goosebumps in their wake as his fingers trailed up the outside of her thighs and up the steppingstones that were her vertebra. He pulled away, though his face said he didn’t really want to. “Gotta check your injuries.” He placed one last peck on her lips before hoisting her up off his lap and onto the edge of the tub once more. “Put them in the water for me, sweetheart.” Erin shivered at the new endearment, gingerly settling her feet in the lightly steaming water. She hissed at the heat at first, and the sting of it against the cuts that littered her skin. Jack said on the toilet next to her, towel on his lap and medical supplies on the counter next to him. He tapped her thigh with the back of his hand. “First one,” he requested. Erin couldn’t help but smile as she lifted her foot into his lap. His frown of concentration looked almost like a pout, his brows furrowed as he brushed his thumb against a bruise. “Doesn’t look too bad,” he murmured, slathering ointment on her cuts. “Lucky there wasn’t kind of glass in the fields. Or nails. Might need to keep you off your feet for a day or two, though.” Erin huffed out a little laugh. “Are you sure you weren’t meant to be a medic?” Jack leveled her with a fondly exasperated look. “I’m positive. The E, M, and T series were medics.” She narrowed her eyes. “That was on purpose, wasn’t it?”

He busied himself with dressing her wound, and Erin made herself busy with watching him. His fingers were rough with work and hardship, but gentle. So much about him was surprisingly gentle, soft almost. “Were you a medic unit?” she asked quietly. “Is that what the J series were?” He seemed to hesitate then, hand lingering as he made a loop of gauze around her palm. “No. No, J series units were regular infantrymen.” “Oh.” She felt a little silly for asking. “You’re very good at it.” His thumb dragged slowly against the bright yellow gauze that colored the back of her hand. “You learn fast on the front lines.” “I can imagine.” She glanced up at his face, at his tired hazel eyes. “For what it’s worth…I’m sorry you went through that.” He turned, meeting her eyes. Once more, she was hit with how tired he looked. “Thank you.” He patted her hand, the touch barely there, and then stood. He ran his fingers through his hair, blowing out a long, slow exhale. “Stay here. I’m going to get us some more supplies. And chuck this piece of junk somewhere. I’m thinking a grocery freezer aisle. What do you think?” “I think that’s highly unsanitary,” Erin said, letting some humor show in her voice. “But I doubt that’s going to stop you.”

Tim sighed, and Erin liked to think there was some fondness in it, mixed in with the put-upon-ness of it. “Of course, my dear. Saving the world, one crop field at a time. That’s our Miss Raincrow.” Erin ducked her head, a flush coming to her cheeks. “Now, now, no need to be embarrassed,” Tim assured her, settling a cold hand on her shoulder. “If we didn’t believe in you, we wouldn’t have hired you. And we certainly wouldn’t be funding your research. We’ve invested a lot in you, Erin. And I’m sure you will surpass all expectations.” “Yes, sir,” Erin murmured. “Very good,” he said, smile back in place. He gave her shoulder a little squeeze before letting go. “I’ll come to check in on you again later this week. Make sure you keep your logs updated in the system. The previous iterations of your formula might not work for you, but perhaps someone else could use it for something else. Reduce, reuse, recycle and all that, you know?” Erin chuckled politely. “If you can find someone who has use for my failures, then more power to them.” “Now, now, my dear,” Tim scolded gently. “There’s no failures in Trance Corp, just steppingstones to success.” “Make sure you remember than in my annual review,” Erin shouted after him as he slipped out her door. Once the door slid shut, she slumped against her lab table with a heavy sigh. By some miracle, she’d managed to talk herself out of a sticky situation, but who knew how many more times she’d be able to do that. She’d had it good for the past eighteen months, but now someone upstairs was getting impatient, and the pressure was going to come down on her sooner rather than later. She had to get this formula done, or she’d lose control of the project…if it didn’t get scrapped entirely. She went back to her microscope, hoping it would hold the answers.

She made her way to the lab door, aiming to stretch her legs with a walk to the break room to grab another coffee. Upon opening it, though, she was hit with a cacophony of chaos. People ran by her, screaming as the sounds of shattering glass and gunfire followed them. Erin looked down the hall, eyes widening in horror as a man in combat gear and a mask that covered the lower half of his face came marching down the hall. Brown eyes devoid of any spark landed on her, and she could feel him zeroing in on her. Panic set in and Erin went scrambling back into her lab, pulling the bright red lever to bring down the emergency lock. The lights went out in the lab, save for the grow lights in her green house and the red glow of the emergency lights along the floor. She struggled to keep her breathing steady as she slowly backed herself into the far corner of her lab, tucking herself behind her storage shelves. It was barely a hiding place. She cursed herself silently. She should have pulled others in with her. The small labs had the best security in the whole building, other than the C-suite offices. She’s seen Carter running past. She could have grabbed him, saved him. Patricia, too, if she’d taken any time to think. Where was TC security? A man dressed like that should never have been able to walk into the building, let alone get to the upper floors. She curled into a ball on the floor, burying her face in her knees as she tried to breathe normally. Hyperventilating in a room full of ammonium and phosphorus compounds was a bad idea, regardless of how good the air filtration system was. The thick security door muffled the chaos outside but didn’t block it out completely. Erin wondered how on Earth she’d managed to be so ignorant to the insanity going on outside before she opened the door. If only she’d been more aware. Then what? What could she have done? Nothing that she hadn’t already scolded herself for not doing.

Erin pressed herself back into her chair, exhaling slowly. “I guess wetwork is a busy industry.” “Now more than ever,” Jack agreed, which only made Erin’s stomach churn more. “Oh,” she murmured. Because what else could she say to that? The silence that filled the space between them was heavy. Erin kept her eyes on the wind turbines on the mountain ridges, watching the slow spinning of the white blades. They were beautiful, both in the simplicity of their design and the gracefulness of their movements. She wasn’t sure if Jack had a safehouse of something similar arranged for them, but she hoped it had a little wind turbine all its own. And if it didn’t, she wondered if Jack would build her one. Look alive, sunshine,” he announced. “We’re entering tribal territory.” She sat up straighter, eyes scanning the horizon. “Which tribe?” The soldier frowned, jaw working as he consulted whatever map he had in his mind. “Choctaw, I think?” Erin caught sight of a distance sign on the side of the highway, barely more than a green and white blur as they passed. She recognized one of the names. Her grandmother’s old hometown. “Cherokee,” she murmured. She felt J-097’s eyes on her. “You a member?” She nodded, a small, empty space opening up in her chest. “My father’s side.” J-097 nodded slowly. “Name probably should have been a dead giveaway, huh?” Raincrow. It was the last thing she had of her father, the last connection she had to her family. “I haven’t been here since my grandmother died.” “When was that?” he asked. “Years ago,” she said. It was hard to remember just how long. “My parents passed not long after, so…” She inhaled sharply, suddenly realizing she was grateful that her parents were no longer alive to worry about her. She flashed him a bitter smile. “I guess that makes this easier, huh?” She thought she saw pity in his eyes, but he looked away too quickly for her to tell. “Yeah,” he murmured. “It does.”

Erin awoke to the distinct sense that something was wrong. Her room was dark, daybreak still hours away. Nothing and no one should be up at this hour except the owls and their prey. Erin swallowed thickly as she slipped from the bed, feeling very much like the prey in that scenario, though she had no idea why. The opened her bedroom door as quietly as she could, only to find Jack standing just outside it, looking like he was moments away from opening it himself. “Jack?” she whispered, feeling that aimless dread growing heavier in her stomach. “What’s wrong?” He shushed her, finger to his lips. “Someone’s here.” Erin’s blood stopped cold in her veins. “What?” Instead of an answer, a gun was thrust into her trembling hands. That damn same handgun she’d used to threaten the conman at the bridge. That felt so long ago now. Everything always seemed to feel so far away when she tried to remember it. “Go out the back door,” Jack ordered. “Run to Marley’s. Use the wood for cover.” “What about you?” she demanded. “I’ll be right behind you. I promise.” She didn’t believe him. “Jack!” Warm lips pressed against hers, so brief that Erin almost wondered if she’d imagined it. “Go!” I didn't get to tell you," she whispered. "I said I'd tell you my wish if we made it out alive." Lightning flashed, a bolt striking the earth below like a spear from heaven. Morgan had to flinch away from its brightness. The roll of thunder that followed seemed almost apologetic, cradling her in its sound. She blinked away the spots in her eyes. For a moment, she thought before her was a trick of her eyes, her mind still clearing the burn of the light from her nerves. There, just out of reach, stood Thor. The runic ink was gone from his arms. The rain did not penetrate his clothing, nor did it weigh down his hair, somehow wilder than it had been before. His eyes glowed, electrical sparks in the same shade of blue danced over his shoulders. She lifted her hand to reach for him, taking a single step, but he beat her to it. Strong arms hoisted her up, large hands holding her aloft as if she weighed nothing. For once, she had to lean down to meet his gaze. He held her up as if she were above him. As if she was what he worshipped. When he spoke, thunder rumbled with every syllable. "Tell me, little king." Her hands trembled as she reached up to take hold of his face. His beard was soft, barely a tickle against her fingertips. "I wish you would stay." He surged up to meet her as she fell into him. Their lips met, desperate and wanting and perfect. His taste settled on her tongue, sweeter and headier than the honey wine from the feast. His sparks danced over her fingers and up her arms, sending goosebumps in their wake. Never had a shock felt so sweet. A spark clung to their lips as the broke apart, a bit of Thor's power that refused to let her go. She stared at him, clear sea teal glowing like his lightning bright blue. Their power sang together. Of course it did. He was her knight after all. "Stay," she pleaded, uncertain if the wetness that rolled own her cheeks was rain or her own tears. "Promise me you'll stay."

She waited with bated breath, eyes darting back and forth between the screen and the edge of the light where W-044 disappeared into the darkness. It wouldn’t take long to get her water. Unless this placed didn’t have any. It might not. Maybe he had to go to the car. Whatever car he’d used to haul her from the farm to wherever this is. The phone vibrated in her hands, and Erin was suddenly very grateful she kept it on silent. She stared at the screen. Three words stared back at her. ‘On our way.’ She wondered, briefly, how they could know where to go from just a text. But Chae-seo was a genius. Anthony was, too. One of them must have come up with something. ‘How long?’ she sent back. A long moment of waiting. Too long, though the clock didn’t even tick over to the next minute before the reply came through. ‘Soon.’ Erin tipped her head back against the mattress with a stuttering sigh. Vague, but just enough to give her hope. She couldn’t possibly know how soon ‘soon’ was, but Jack hadn’t gotten her this far only to let her down now. She had to believe in him, believe in the others. He and Marley were going to race each other to be the first one through the door with a gun. And Chae-seo would beat them both to the punch with her damn wrench.

Toby meowed loudly, as if scolding her for foisting the old lady next door onto him. She didn’t know what he was complaining about. Ms. Heydari gave him way more treats than she did. The lights were dim out in the hallway, the rest of the world still just waking up. The sounds of the city were starting to pick up outside as early workers settled into their routines. The smell of biodiesel hit her nose as she exited her high-rise building. She wrinkled her nose, digging into her bag for the rebreather mask that she’d forgotten to put on before leaving the building…again. She inhaled the filtered, eucalyptus-scented air with a sigh of relief. Rebreather properly in place, she hurried down the sidewalk towards the tram station. The faster she got to the lab, the sooner she didn’t have to worry about what was entering her lungs. The Sprawl – as it was affectionately and not-so-affectionally called – was a megalopolis that spanned along must of the eastern seaboard, from what was once known as New York City all the way down to the once-capital of the former United States. Well, technically it was still the capital of the United States, but what the looked like now was very different than what it did before the city was swallowed up by the Sprawl in the penultimate years of the 21st centuries. Erin supposed that’s what happened when war and natural disasters plagued a country after decades of political strife. Or, she would if she gave such things much thought. The tram station was crowded with commuters, as was typical. She gave a nod to an older gentleman in a burgundy suit that she recognized, who offered her a crinkled-eyed smile in return. “Lovely morning,” he said, voice muffled by his own rebreather. “It is,” she agreed beatifically. “What flavor are you breathing today?” “Cinnamon,” he said cheerfully. “Just got a new filter last week, so it’s still fresh. You?”

Generic November Writing Challenge 2025: Day 30 Final word count: 51,312 out of 50,000 “Let’s everyone put the weapons down,” Chae-seo said, calm but uneasy. “We don’t mean anyone any harm,” “We do if he doesn’t stop pointing his gun at Marley,” Anthony said, colder than Erin was used to hearing him be. “Winter,” Erin said sharply. “Don’t point guns at my friends.” Winter stepped back, looking at her with those damn puppy dog eyes again as he lowered his pistol. How he’d managed to go from cold, emotionless assassin to kicked puppy so easily, she didn’t know. And none of the theories that came to mind were pleasant to think about. She could feel Jack’s eyes on her before she even turned to acknowledge him. She wasn’t sure if he was angry with her or just horrified. Maybe both. Probably both. “You named the assassin that tried to kill you?” he shouted. “He asked me to!” Erin shouted back, hissing as she quickly regretted it. Who would have thought shouting would irritated a gunshot wound in your hip. She collapsed back onto the bed. “Besides, I also kiss assassins that were hired to kill me.” He glared at her. She glared back. A huff escaped him, and that was all the warning Erin got before Jack’s lips pressed against hers, sweet and relieved and unconcerned with anyone else in the room. “I’m glad you’re safe.”

Generic November Writing Challenge Day 26 Day 25/26 word count: 46,748 out of 50,000 She scrambled down the trellis as fast as she could, ignoring the way the thorny vines nipped at her skin. The sound of another gunshot startled her, sending her flinching away from the trellis. She fell the last five feet, landing hard on the ground below. She wheezed, struggling to catch her breath. Her lungs ached, but she couldn’t sense any other pain. No broken bones, that she could tell. She’d be grateful for it later. For now, she scrambled up onto her feet. She could hear the thumping of the dead-eyed man’s boots against the roof. She bolted for the road, for town. Someone would be able to help her. Someone had to be able to help her. A gunshot rang out behind her, and something whizzed by her head. She bit back a scream, refusing to look over her shoulder. She had to keep running. Looking back would only slow her down. Her lungs burned. Her legs felt like they might melt under her at any second. She cursed her past self for never finding the time to get to a damn gym. The pain hit before the sound of the gunshot reached her ears, radiating out from her hip. Burning. She hadn’t considered a gunshot would burn.

Generic November Writing Challenge 2025 - Day 23 Day 23 word count: 38,664 out of 50,000 “I’m less worried about her than I am about AY…Anthony,” he admitted. “He’ll think I’m trying to dump all the work on him.” “Are you?” Chae-seo asked, turning away from the sink and grabbing a nearby towel. Chris grinned. “Maybe.” Chae-seo flicked the towel in his direction, the hit only making Chris laugh, his head tipping back and a hand going up to his chest. “Go on,” she challenged, taking on a facsimile of Marley’s barely-hanging-on Southern twang. “Git.” He beat a hasty retreat out the back door, and Erin could hear Anthony hollering at him, though she couldn’t make out the words exactly. Chae-seo huffed, hands on her hips and looking pleased with herself. “You’re so comfortable with each other already,” Erin pointed out, awed but a little uncertain. “He makes it easy,” Chae-seo admitted. “He’s…charming.” Erin nodded slowly. “He said his series was built for espionage. He…he said Jack was pretty enough to be a ‘doll’ like him.” Something crossed Chae-seo’s face. Something Erin couldn’t quite read. “Well,” she said after a time, turning to Erin with a tight smile. “That would explain it.” “Jack doesn’t seem to think he’s here to spy on us,” Erin said quickly, a sense of guilt making itself at home in her ribcage. “No,” Chae-seo agreed. “I didn’t get that sense either. Charming’s just…his default. Probably doesn’t know how to be anything else.” “Charming’s not a bad thing to be.” Chae-seo smiled again, a little more natural this time. “No. It’s not.”

Generic November Writing Challenge 2025: Day 18 Day 18 word count: 30,055 out of 50,000 “We’ll find another way,” he promised her. “We’ll talk to Chae-seo. Maybe her contacts at the university can get you the raw chemicals.” She shook her head. “The raw ingredients are too dangerous to have in such a small space. That’s why TC had me use Universal Component in the first place.” She gave him a wry smile. “They were trying to use my formulas to make weapons, after all.” “Dammit, sunshine, we can’t just give up!” Jack insisted. “Not after all you went through to make sure they couldn’t do that!” Erin let out a soft sigh through her nose. “I guess I’ll just have to be content with the fact they don’t have any of my formulas at all.” “Yeah, but…” Jack hesitated, frustration evident in the pinch of his brows. His next words came out raw and breathy. “Fuck, sunshine. You were gonna save the world.” Her breath hitched, the hopelessness of it all hitting her in the chest like a wave. Tears spilled over her cheeks once more, hot and wet and thicker than before. Her vision blurred, but it didn’t matter once she buried her face in Jack’s broad, warm chest.

GeNoWriCha 2025 - Day 17 Day 17 word count: 28,032 out of 50,000 Erin couldn’t believe this. There wasn’t anything at all between them. Technically, she was his kidnapping victim, whisked away from everything she’d ever known because he’d popped up into her life to screw everything up. If he’d never been hired, she’d be home, working on her formula and cuddling with her cat. But he had been hired. And instead of killing her like he was hired to do, he saved her from what might have been a worse fate at the hands of Trance Corp. He kept her work from being twisted into something that could only be called evil. And he stuck around because…he felt responsible for her, she supposed. Or maybe he felt guilty. Not just for what was happening with her, but for all of the things he’d done since being spat out of a test tube and onto a battlefield. He was probably just keeping her alive as some kind of penitence. But, if that was the case, why would he hold her so sweetly after her nightmare? Erin pushed the thought away quickly, but not before it managed to make her chest ache with something she didn’t want to name. Because naming something gave it power. Naming something made it linger. She glanced over her shoulder at Jack, watching as his pout shifted into a soft smile when he caught her looking. It was too late. Even without a name, that feeling was going to make itself at home in the spaces between her ribs, honey sweet and sticky. She was royally and utterly fucked.

Generic November Writing Challenge Day 13 GeNoWriCha 2025 Day 13 word count: 22,158 out of 50,000 Erin said nothing, scouring the cabinets for the illusive coffeemaker. She made a rather embarrassing noise of triumph when she found it, hauling it up from below the counter. It was a fancy thing, with a built-in bean grinder and milk steamer and all the other bells and whistles. Jack looked at it like it was a bomb he’d have to defuse. “Don’t worry,” Erin assured him, chest puffed out in confidence. “I used to work at the campus coffee shop as an undergrad.” “And yet you abided by the swill Trance Corp fed you?” Jack teased. “Good coffee takes time, which I never had working for TC,” Erin said. That was something she hadn’t really wanted to admit to herself before. She’d had so little time for any of the small joys in life. And now, even on the run, it felt like she had all the time in the world. It felt like she was almost required to take that time for the joys TC had denied her. Good coffee, fresh air, people who sold her onions at a discount because they thought she was pretty. “Well…” Two large, warm hands settled on her hips. She blinked, almost startled. When had he gotten so close? She could feel his breath on her cheek. Her eyes couldn’t look away from his, counting every speck of green in the hazel. “Now you have plenty. Yeah?” Her voice was little more than a breath. “Yeah…”

GeNoWriCha 2025 - Day 12 GeNoWriCha 2025 - Day 12 word count: 20,510 out of 50,000 New hands – large and warm and rough in texture but gentle in touch – wrapped around her shoulders, pulling her up and out of the bed linens. They pulled her into flesh – hot like a furnace and somehow both soft and hard under her fingertips – and held her. “It’s alright,” a deep voice murmured into her ear. “It’s alright, sunshine. I’ve got you. No one’s going to hurt you. I promise.” Erin blinked away sleep and tears, finding herself in that small, newly familiar room. Right. The cottage. They’d made it to the safe place. The place where they could hide and no one would find them. “Jack?” she whispered, voice raspy. She must have been screaming in her sleep. Guilt bit at her. “I’m sorry. I-I didn’t mean to…” Jack shushed her, one of his hands coming up to her hair, running those callous-rough fingers through it. “Don’t. You have nothing to apologize for.”

GeNoWriCha Day 10 word count: 19,013 out of 50,000 “Are we safe?” she asked. “Not until we get past the bay,” he admitted. “But we’re out of that specific danger zone, yeah.” Erin nodded, bringing the seat back into its upright position. “How much longer until we’re…” She trailed off, knowing what the answer to that question would actually be. “We’re safe?” Jack finished the question for her. “Yeah.” Jack’s jaw worked, like he was trying to come up with a pretty lie to tell her. “Honestly, sunshine, I don’t know if we ever will be.” Erin let out a tiny, bitter breath of a laugh. “That’s what I thought you’d say.” “It’ll be better,” he told her, voice firm and reassuring. Then, again, like he was trying to reassure himself instead. “It’ll be better.”
