You know in the context of you telling a person who may not be in fandom, I think calling them a rare pair was a fair assessment! Technically it's not as rare as, idk, Atsuhina and Koganegawa, but it's not the immediate ship you'd think of with Atsumu either? Although I guess there's only Kita?

I'd say it's about fan content. How many people are excited to talk about the ship? Threads, fics, art, doujin.

There's an atsuhina web/online event called "このトスを君に捧ぐ" also shortened as "トス君". If you check the 侑日 tag in twitter and pixiv you'll see some artists and writers advertising their fanworks for that event.

ahh i think i was definitely making comparisons in a western audience context bc i understand that they're quite popular in japan! they only have 1.3k true fics on ao3 which i shouldn't have used to compare; however i did have to explain atsuhina to people who are normal about haikyu haha

It's definitely not a rare pair imo! In JP there are atsuhina-only events held annually. Ships that have fans organizing couple-specific events is a good indicator of a ship being popular
