INSTRUCTIONAL LABS AS COMMUNITIES OF PRACTICE Instructional labs are an important component of undergraduate STEM education. With instructional labs taking up a significant place in the first year of undergraduate study, they impact student persistence and STEM identity1-3. These labs not only develop students’ conceptual learning, but they also enculturate students into STEM as a community-oriented profession based on cooperative work around shared resources4-5. An instructional lab can be thought of as a Community of Practice (COP)6, defined as a group of members pursuing a common set of goals by using conventional practices. We have previously demonstrated that students can develop different perspectives of a COP7-8, which we describe as a mental model9 of the Community of Practice, or COP model. We administered a survey in which students draw a picture of their COP model10 of Introductory Physics for Life Sciences (IPLS), an interactive course centered around lab-based explorations of physics content. We cataloged their drawing elements and categorized them as related to the lab’s goals, members, and practices. Below are example drawings two students from the same lab group created with elements that emphasize different aspects of their shared experience: NETWORK ANALYSIS To study the N = 74 drawings we collected, we created a network of the 71 individual elements that appeared in more than 5 drawings. 💯. My first work with the federal government was COP6 & COP7, so I enjoy how each one since those is declared “a good first step” (we just had COP29). I left & still work in decarbonization, but I would add a few feet of water above, so that if the ostrich does pull out its head, it will drown.
