It was maybe a couple mm across, like the head of a pin in the water.

I’m curious if how closely related or not it is to the also undescribed feather boa cydippids we get up in the Salish Sea… their tentacles have a similar fine fluffy quality
It’s a Beroe abyssicola based on a photo of the first one I ever saw back in Spring of 2016. I knew when I found the base fabric I had to make it - it looks just like Friday Harbor in Spring.

Ctenophores. They make their gay little rainbows all year. It's a Pride parade in the ocean every day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. 366 every four years.

Photo from today when I learned that from putting them in a kreisel together.

It’s been a long time since we’ve had a #CtenoTakeOver, something that started well before this space went public.
I want to hear about your fave cteno science 🧪 and see your cteno art 🐡🦑🐙

#plasmalogens are a group of glycerophospholipids found in cell membranes. They're really common in the deep sea #combjellies. The odd shape of plasmalogens makes the molecules good at resisting deformation under pressure.

2 benthic types and 2? pelagic (3 of which I saw in the wild in Bali!). These represent only part of the morphological diversity of the phylum that is outgroup to all other animals 😱
