I made some ctenophore beads for #CtenophoreDay! They're a bit "over colored", because ctenophores are mostly just clear/translucent, and that's really hard to work with as an artist.

(They're about 1 inch (2.5cm) tall, with a 4mm hole through the center.)

Day one of 2025 and I found this Haeckelia rubra, a ctenophore I’ve never seen before and that is fairly rare in the area.

It was maybe a couple mm across, like the head of a pin in the water.

Finally got to see “Red X”, a little undescribed cydippid ctenophore, at Monterey Bay Aquarium this week.

I’m curious if how closely related or not it is to the also undescribed feather boa cydippids we get up in the Salish Sea… their tentacles have a similar fine fluffy quality

So happy with how this new bandana design came out.

It’s a Beroe abyssicola based on a photo of the first one I ever saw back in Spring of 2016. I knew when I found the base fabric I had to make it - it looks just like Friday Harbor in Spring.

Happy Pride Month! You know who doesn't change their brand image to rainbow just for June?

Ctenophores. They make their gay little rainbows all year. It's a Pride parade in the ocean every day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. 366 every four years.

A fun fact for #CtenoTakeOver:

Phronima eat Beroe abyssicola

🧪🦑🐙
Ummm, who was going to tell me that Phronima eat Beroe abyssicola and that when they do they and all their little babies turn pink??

Photo from today when I learned that from putting them in a kreisel together.

Well I didn’t make it to 1004 but I did add 126 more to my total so that’t averaging a little over a cteno a day

If you live near a coastline, try looking for ctenophores today!
It’s almost Ctenophore Day! I set up a BioBlitz on @inaturalist.bsky.social to celebrate. Spread the word, and let’s see how many people we can get out looking for ctenos!

Happy Ctenophore Day, everyone!

It’s been a long time since we’ve had a #CtenoTakeOver, something that started well before this space went public.

I want to hear about your fave cteno science 🧪 and see your cteno art 🐡🦑🐙
Happy Ctenophore Day!

For #CtenophoreDay an experience so extraordinary & exquisite if I hadn't captured it on camera I'd have thought it was a dream. Last month, heading into the sunset at end of #MySwim at Shimoda, found myself in a vast raft of ?Mikado Comb Jellies (Bolinopsis mikado) #cilia #CtenoTakeover #Japan🧵1/6

Nerd stuff, yesterday new evidence was published that comb jellies are the sister group to all other animals. Suggesting nervous systems evolved twice. So this is what our cousins look like https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-023-05936-6
