Two 3d printed tiktaalik skulls. On the left, smaller, white colored, mouth closed, facing camera. On the right, larger, tan colored, mouth propped open with a stick, facing right-ish. A 3d printed model for demonstrating the cranial kinesis (movement) of a hawk skull, with different parts in different colors. A musk deer (a deer-like animal with large upper fangs) skull, tan colored, facing left. Two 3d printed Lined Earwig designs. The earwig is an insect with a reddish head and thorax, a dark abdomen with pincers on the end, tan legs and a pair of tan stripes down the back. Each earwig has a 1-inch (2.5cm) split ring though the abdomen. The left design is facing upish, the right design is facing down. In between them is a US penny for scale.

An illustration of a pink harpy (a mythical creature that is a combination of a woman in this case and a bird) with pale tipped wings in profile. She has turned her face to the viewer and looks surprised/frustrated as she holds a wriggling red snake in her mouth. The background is a light peachy pink An illustration of a walking wingless sphinx in profile moving to the right. She has bright red fur with a slightly darker spotted pattern on her back. Her face is pale with dark scleras and bright irises. She has a patch of light fur on her chest and tail An illustration of a red Hippocampus (a mythical creature half horse and half fish) with a pale strip down its body, pale fins, and a pale mane. It is in profile with its neck tucked in towards its body and mouth open. The background is a light peachy pink An illustration of a flying Mothman. He is airborne and has a dark body with red webbing in his wings and red antenna. His face is pale with his mouth twisted in an open scream, his eyes are wide and are red. The background is a pale pink

A new portrait of Monolophosaurus. The crest here is more voluminous than most reconstructions, exploring the idea that the underlying bone might have been anchoring a larger pneumatised casque.
#SciArt
A digital portrait of a large carnivorous dinosaur in a forest setting. The dinosaur has a large boney crest above its snout and eyes, and large folds of skin hanging around its neck and jaws. The dinosaur is mostly earthy brown, but with brighter blues and pinks around the eyes and throat.

#paleoctober2025 day 10 & #fossilfriday : Mourasuchus !

Crocs really are the underdogs of extinct reptiles, with species you couldn't even imagine. Mourasuchus is a giant caiman from the miocene of south america equiped with a flat head and could have "gently" engulfered small invertebrates.

Name one of your biggest fears as a biologist. I start: misspelling species names on public docs! Clearly it happens so often to ppl that NCBI includes misspelled names in its records. Hilarious.

Was so🤏close to publish Day 10 #invertober2025 (the common earthworm) with a typo💀 Lubrimcus terrestris
A vectorial digital drawing of an Lumbricus terrestris, known as the Common Earthworm, set against a pale blue background. The segmented worm is coiled into an S-shape. The rear end is a pale, slightly pinkish-tan color, while the front end, which includes the clitellum (the band used for reproduction), is a darker reddish-brown color. The clitellum itself is a distinct maroon/red band. The text "invertobter2025 - Day 10" is in the bottom right corner. A screenshot of a search box within the NCBI BLAST interface. The user has typed "homo s" into the search field under a section labeled "Organism" The search box is returning several suggested results in red text, showing common misspellings of the scientific name for humans, Homo sapiens, along with the correct taxonomy ID:
· Homo sampiens (taxid:9606)
· Homo sapeins (taxid:9606)
· Homo sapian (taxid:9606)
· Homo sapians (taxid:9606)
· Homo sapien (taxid:9606)
· Homo sapience (taxid:9606)

Happy #Invertober Day 10!

Common earthworm (lumbricus terrestris)

Went for a different style as I wasn't sure how to make an earthworm aesthetically pleasing 😅

#Invertober2025
Black and white drawing of an earthworm in an S-shape on its side. The words would you still love me follow the curve on the left and the words if I was a worm follow the curve on the right. The background is an elaborate symmetrical doodle of teardrop shapes of varying sizes.

Quick #FossilFriday #paleoart post: a 2025 redo of my 2019 take on the giant #deer Megaloceros. Palaeolithic art captures some aspects of Megaloceros appearance but the details are not unambiguous: when is a line across a body a stripe, when is it a boundary between colour regions?
Three Megaloceros, a stag, doe and fawn, in front of an ice age landscape, painted in 2025. The bodies of the adults have large blocks of colour, without prominent stripes.
