Kooky cobras

This population was very surprising. Typically Darlingtonia grows in slow flowing seeps but these guys were colonizing the edge of this intensely fast flowing creek. Though atypical for the species this was still an amazing find …

I already have the combo. Ophrys Scorpio + a discard is now Stapelia + this guy in the scale, which is basically a one sided skill drain. We still die to Droll and Nib, but we don't have to run Darlingtonia Cobra anymore.

A very happy birthday to my wonderful wife!

Here is an amazing card our 16 year old daughter drew for her. (Wife has a triffid farm in the greenhouse.)

Darlingtonia californica “is unique among the three genera of North American pitcher plants. It does not trap rainwater in its pitcher. Instead, it regulates the level of water inside physiologically by releasing or absorbing water into the trap that has been pumped up from the roots.”

Darlingtonia californica, a species of carnivorous pitcher plant, native to Northern California and Western Oregon.

The only state park in Oregon dedicated to a single plant, this short nature walk takes you into a small bog filled with carnivorous Pitcher Plants (Darlingtonia californica). These hooded cobra-like plants supplement themselves with insects as they grow in nutrient deficient soils along the coast.

Nightmarish as pitcher plants might seem, there's evidence that they give back to the insect communities they feed on. That and more of the best from @science.org and science in this edition of #ScienceAdviser: www.science.org/content/arti... 🧪

Some of you may remember that rodents destroyed my outdoor cobra even though it was in a chicken wire protective cage. This is my ‘backup’ that was growing in a basement terrarium. Just repotted into this larger net pot. It …

Darlingtonia californica that arrived last Saturday, pic taken today.

I've been avoiding them for all these years until now due to their tricky reputation.

Looks like it may be dormant atm. I love how it came already looking like a nest full of tiny cobras. And the one weirdly opaque pitcher. 🤍

It is overcast in war-torn Portland. My carnivorous plants have made it safely through the roofing work, though the planter box gained a few scars from being right next to the dumpster. It's quiet around here today, maybe a little too quiet.

Major congrats to our lab’s first PhD recipient, Nonno Hasegawa. Her work on the population genetics of Darlingtonia will help us better manage and protect the objectively coolest plant on earth

I bought these wood blocks at an art show. They are 2 of the 8 created by Christy Turner. I never saw the others.

Sipping coffee while laying them out.

Damn.

Caution, little butterfly. Now’s the time to know the difference between what feeds you and what eats you.
