The House That Learned My Name
The house waited until I learned its sounds before it learned my name. At first, it behaved the way empty houses do—pipes knocking in protest, wood sighing when the temperature shifted, a door that needed an extra pull to latch. I welcomed these things. Noise meant predictability. Noise could be catalogued. Silence could not. I moved in during late October, when the days shortened without apology.
