Day 15: Giant Ground Sloth

'Wild avocados depended on ground sloths eating them to survive' may be an oversimplified science meme...but it's cute, so I will draw it

Various preserved examples of #Mylodon skin and fur. Mylodon was a giant #groundsloth that went #extinct approx. 10,000 years ago. Examination of the furs revealed that Mylodon was the only type of sloth to have osteoderms imbedded in their skin.

🦥 #FossilFriday P68.40.1 - the rarest Minnesota fossil I’ve ever held in my hand: an ungual phalanx of #Megalonyxjeffersoni (Giant #GroundSloth). Discovered in a pile of excavated peat, this individual toe claw remains the singular specimen of this animal found in the state.

Unfortunately it was in Florida but they unearthed a giant ground sloth claw while digging a water line. Archeology is cool! Article in time-line previous to this.

#GROUNDSLOTH

Picture yourself strolling along a meandering stream nestled within a late summer pr and wild flowers wave gently above your head. Now imagine this large creature, cove hair, lumbering past.

🦣 Giant Ground Sloths roamed N. & S. America 🌎 from the Miocene to Ice Age (~20,000 yrs ago).

🥥🌿 They were herbivores, munching leaves & fruit.

Some, like #Megatherium, stood 20' tall! 🦖

Few predators, but early humans 🏹 may have hunted them to extinction. ❄️

Looking back at Dececchi et al. (2020), I just realized that the findings in our recent paper on #groundsloth thermal energetics may have more applications for #Tyrannosaurids than I initially realized. Both were getting "metabolic mileage" by using energy saving adaptations.

While we had a decent sample size for our recent paper on #groundsloth physiology and integument, there were a few that unfortunately didn't make the final cut. One such specimen was this #Eremotherium tooth from the Talara tar pits in Peru. #FossilFriday

Studies on the large North American ground sloth Paramylodon harlani, which went extinct just around 11,000 years ago

I really love ground sloths and I hope you do too!

I just finished working on #Pleistocene #groundsloth #coprolites from a New Mexico cave. So, for #FossilFriday here is a plate of #CalciumOxalate (#CaOx) #phytoliths from said poop. I rarely get to work on CaOx phytoliths and make use of my polarizers so this was a treat! #2is#1
