In his book, The Great Convergence: Information Technology and the New Globalization, Richard Baldwin suggests that “under the Old Globalization, the frontline of competition was thought of as national borders … Under the New Globalization, the frontline of competition is better thought of as being between cross-national production networks” and “[The effective geographical boundaries of competition are] no longer really Japan versus Germany; it is the Honda-led [global value chain] versus the BMW-led [global value chain].” This is a profound insight with significant implications for how interests and ideology might intersect to make it harder to corral corporations into national projects. This is even more likely to be the case if inter-firm rivalries are particularly bitter inside a shared domestic market. If so, this could lead to cross-border rather than national alliance patterns, including features such as sharing the costs and benefits of research into emerging technologies. The logic of the marketplace could lead to alliance patterns that look more like rival airline families that share frequent-flier mile programs across national boundaries. It would make eminent sense for firms with a global footprint and complementary local strengths to partner to share research or other expenses across geographies. And for all the rhetoric about “friend-shoring” across “shared values,” it could prove hard for governments to keep corporations from pursuing the most economically advantageous path, particularly if official definitions of friends, foes, and values themselves prove to be variable and instrumental. Being a national champion could mean less to corporations that have come to think that under the conditions of “actually existing capitalism”—even as of mid-2023—capitalism in one country is barely capitalism at all.

At the beginning of November, an insider at ABC News leaked a hot mic interview with Amy Robach, Good Morning America's co-host and Breaking News anchor at ABC, recorded three months earlier. The segment, passed to the investigative website Project Veritas, showed Robach venting her frustration to an off-camera producer about an interview she and a colleague Jim Hill had conducted with Virginia Giuffre in 2015, which was then squashed by the network. I've had this interview with Virginia Roberts [now Virginia Giuffre] [alleged Epstein victim]. We would not put it on the air. Um, first of all, I was told, Who's Jeffrey Epstein? No one knows who that is. This is a stupid story. [Virginia] told me everything. She had pictures, she had everything. She was in hiding for 12 years, we convinced her to come out. We convinced her to talk to us. It was unbelievable what we had. Clinton. We had everything. I tried for three years to get it on to no avail. The Palace found out that we had her whole allegations about Prince Andrew and threatened us a million different ways. One pressure point was to deny the channel any future inter. views with the present Prince and Princess of Wales. As a result of the story being suppressed, Epstein and his associates had been able to groom, traffic and abuse young girls for another three years.

I really can't stress enough how it is NOT newsworthy that a kid placed second in an inter-school running race.

But sure let's publish multiple stories her including potentially indentifying details.

It's not a once-off, it's a pattern.
Sahra O’Doherty, President of the Australian Association of Psychologists, warns there are serious negative consequences for children made the focus of these stories. Alongside the anxiety, stress and hypervigilance that a child is likely to experience, “there’s also a really big increase in risk of depression, risk of suicidal ideation”. These are similar to the harms that come from being bullied or cyberbullied by peers, amplified by the huge scale of the audience invited to discuss a child in aggressive comment sections. “To willingly subject children to an audience that is inflamed by these sorts of stories … It gives society this passive permission to talk in really awful ways about vulnerable individuals,” O’Doherty says.

BOOK REVIEW The end of college football: on the human cost of an all-american game, written by Nthan Kalman- Lamb and Derek Silva, Chapel Hill, USA, University of North Carolina Press, 2024, 252 pp., (paperback); ISBN 9781469683461; $24.95 It is unlikely that Nathan Kalman-Lamb or Derek Silva will be asked by the current US administration for their thoughts on college football or college sports more generally, but it is equally unlikely that they will lose any sleep over this situation. On 24 July 2025, President Trump signed an Executive Order with the aim of ‘protecting college sports’, and to prevent ‘student-athletes’ from being viewed and treated as professional athletes. Kalman-Lamb and Silva prefer the term ‘campus athletic workers’ to reflect the (unpaid) work that is undertaken on college campuses by students and instead of looking for ways to ‘protect’ sports, instead call for ‘the end of college football’ in their remarkable book of the same name. The book draws on 25 semi-structured in-depth interviews with former NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) college footballers who played at a high level to highlight the exploita- tion and harm that occurs on campuses as a result of the money and prestige involved in the sport at this level. The introductory chapter sets out some of the wider context of the book, and college football more generally, whilst also introducing and explaining key concepts that support the arguments advanced in the book. They acknowledge earlier work in this area and argue that their work is ‘grounded in a theoretical framework that recognises college sport as part of a system of US racial capitalism’ (p.7), also bringing in work that highlights the ‘plantation dynamics’ that see ‘predominantly white institutions’ (PWIs) exploit and draw profit from the bodies of predominantly young Black men. The authors also highlight that the perspectives of former college footballers have often been neglected in these discussions. The… have – speaking to former footballers – and also explain their own biographies and positionality and the potential impact that this may have on the research discussions and their interpretations of those discussions. The use of quotations from the inter- views are excellent and, whilst some readers may question whether they are too long or too frequent, the authors argue otherwise. They explain that it was important for these voices to be foregrounded in the book, given the lack of attention they receive in other discussions about college football stating that ‘reproducing the precise speech acts . . . is the single most important intervention we can make: to share experiences that did not previously exist in the public sphere’ (p.11). In an excellent methodolo- gical appendix, they acknowledge that some readers or critics will point towards the relatively small sample size and thus their works’ ‘non-representativeness and lack of generalizability’. In response to such arguments, the authors invite others to expand on their work and note that they will ‘ecstatically accept a reference to this book as rudimentary’ (p.208) if this happens. In adopting this open approach, Kalman- Lamb and Silva, in my opinion, very effectively head off any discussion of potential shortcomings, weaknesses or criticisms of their work. At times, whilst reading the book, I wondered what some of the coaches would have to say about the situations articulated by the players, and this would be valuable work, but it was also not the point of the book. Arguing for more of some things or fewer of other things in relation to this book, or suggesting things be done differently, merely feels like suggesting that a different book should have been written, and that is absolutely not a view I share. The book deserves to be read widely. I am not completely au fait with the intricacies of college football, and do not follow it closely at all. I think even with the school outfits, my biggest gripe with them is how some sets would have bigger, shorter or longer pants and you could not inter-change them with your tops.

Having no clothing options BLOWS, but not being able to change to 1 out of 4 of my default pants is the cherry on top.

Even more niche than my usual posts...

Coming into Crewe just now, I noticed an engine with the plate 'Avocet' that I remember being named for the @rspb.bsky.social centenary in 1989.

Turns out that it is unique in railway history and restoration has just been completed by enthusiasts.
The unique Class 89, 89001, was built as a prototype in 1986 for a fleet that was never ordered. 89001 was named "Avocet" on 16th January 1989, with the plates removed again by July 1992 when the loco was put up for sale. Bought privately by a team of Brush engineers, it passed through the ownership of a bus company before being sold to GNER who overhauled the loco and returned it to traffic in 2000. It was again stored in 2003, and moved to Barrow Hill into the group's care at the end of 2004. Following attention from the group, the loco was passed fit to move by rail and travelled to Crewe Works and Norwich for events in 2005. Put up for sale by GNER in October 2006, our "89 Appeal" resulted in the purchase of the loco by the end of the year. It was repainted into original InterCity Executive livery in early 2007, and then in 2020 into Inter City Swallow livery. Copied from website mentioned in post.

The thing about console exclusives is that people are getting the cause and effect mixed up. Console exclusives being a bigger thing back before inter-platform builds were really as possible, they were used by consoles as a selling point, and thus there was incentive to make a killer library
