I feel like we had this same conversation when Yokoyama came out and I think the atmosphere toward trans athletes in Britain (well, in a lot of countries) is so virulently hostile that Japan’s apathy/low-level dislike of the LGBTQ community seems welcoming by comparison.

There are serious mental health issues facing our kids, all of them, but LGBTQ+ kids in particular face particular distress. Even here, in our blue bubble, in our ostensibly welcoming and affirming city. Surveys like this can help public health authorities understand what interventions are needed.

The fabric of UK society is falling apart due to regressive rightwing hatred. People previously welcomed by the UK are going back to their own more welcoming countries. LGBTQ+ people are leaving for countries that respect their rights. The people that remain are amongst the most unhappy in the world

It is rather pathetic that in 2025 we still have, if not outright homophobia, then attitudes that aren't wholly welcoming to the LGBTQ+ community.
