"gentry" originates from the Old French word "genterie" which means "nobility of rank" or "gentle birth." It entered the English language in the 14th century, referring to a social class below nobility but above yeomanry, typically associated with landownership and a respectable social position.

“In medieval times, the Hungarian Empire granted Székely villages like Karácsonyfalva control of their lands. This system of communal landownership has persisted, with a few interruptions, for centuries.”

Just discovered "When the Moon Rises: Peasants and Ireland from the Tudor Conquest to the Decline of Landownership." It's an epic story of Ireland told from the perspective of the land and the peasants. History buffs, especially those interested in the struggle for land, shouldn't miss it. 📚🌙

Even the reservations came under threat. In the 1730s, Virginia began a policy of "allotment," which stripped tribes of their collective landownership and gave parcels to individual members, who might then be pressured to sell them to outsiders, slowly eliminating the reservations entirely. 27/

The controversy's roots trace back to the early 1900s & a lease from the Travancore royal family. 👑 Later, it was intended for Farook College, established for Muslim empowerment. 🎓 #History #Education #LandOwnership

Everyone who has family in kibbutzim and in a moshav knows that. But landownership isn't only an ideologically case, it is also bound to secular law and taking someone else's land is illegal.

It *doesn't* say that one's Right to vote "*can't* be abridged" for reasons OTHER than the basis of sex!

Say--Landownership or a lack thereof.

Or military service, heritage/ parentage, job status, the way you pass a random "test" of knowledge, etc.

The 19th doesn't guarantee a right *to* vote,

Do you think money lobbying and corporate influence play no role in shaping SCOTUS nominations or Senate policy? Would the institutions exist in the same form without a society built on slavery, landownership and capital accumulation?

That's not really the full picture. Schemes like the Community Monuments Fund have been transformative in recent years.

Landownership and access is a really difficult issue. Personally I'd much prefer to see a Scottish right-to-roam style model, it is too restrictive here.

The economics is simple, the politics much less so. Landownership in England - and the political power that derives from it - remains less than transparent.
