A vanitas still life in rectangular format. Two small stacks of books sit on a table top. At the left of the painting, there is a reddish-orange cloth covering about half the table; it lies smooth at the front but is crumpled in a heap at the back. On it sit two closed books; behind them another book rests its spine against them and lies open. On the right side of the painting an open notepad spills over the front of the table. It is held down by a large closed book with a bookmark sticking out the top, on top of which sits a more slender book, spine out to the viewer. On top of the smaller book sits a skull, with its back side to the viewer. However, the front of the skull is shown as a reflectio in the small framed mirror sitting opposite. Just to right of the skull a candle top (unlit) emerges from behind the books; and at the painting's far right is an hourglass with its bottom portion concealed by the larger book.
