Even some promotional/merch art for S prominently featured the Moon Castle and Princess Serenity. It seems odd that they would push that as a motif only to not actually tie it into the main plot in any way.

Perhaps originally the alien invaders were once enemies of the Moon Kingdom and were sealed away by Queen Serenity, and the climax was originally going to be The Great Disaster that led to Neo Crystal Tokyo.

Oh, I agree. This just reminded me of a comment I saw somewhere claiming Sailor Moon ended with "a fascist dictatorship" because Serenity ended up as queen.

Bloop lol that’s her super super saiyan mode. She’s like serenity princess or something I forgot the full title. Chibi moon gets it too and so do the sailor scouts when they finally ascend. Their full forms have wing like tail things.
