Assorted OS-tan / computer-tan sillies. A lot of these come from convos & jokes with friends. (IDs in alt text)

"Flag day" dates to a change to ASCII on MULTICS on Flag Day, 1966 (<a href="http://bit.ly/ehz2z8);" class="hover:underline text-blue-600 dark:text-sky-400 no-card-link" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-link="bsky">http://bit.ly/ehz2z8); any one is surprising, but all three? #coldcock

Honestly, I’m even willing to accept as far back as Multics, or even the Dartmouth Time-Sharing system. Just.. where the HECK does NT fit into this currently Unix-dominated world? Is it just some survivor from the much more varied past? A weird distant step-cousin? WHAT IS IT??

Multics: "and I took that personally"

One of the goals of multics seems to be indirectly providing an environment suitable for building highly modular software. That being said I don’t exactly know how they solved the DLL problem, and to be fair I think the answer is they didn’t

Neumann worked on Multics via Bell Labs, way before my time, which was in the Honeywell era.

That's one of the most modern systems on here.

The usual list is: 211bsd, v7 Unix, RSX-11M+, Multics MR12.8, TOPS-20, TOPS-10, ITS, 4.3bsd, OpenVMS 7.3, VM/370r6. So 10 rather than 11.

211bsd is basically modern; most of 43bsd but still runs on a split I/D PDP-11.

@ephemeromorph except that Unix is not actually an acronym.

Unix was simply named as a pun on Multics which was a common OS for the PDP 10 at the time.

It never stood for anything, it was just wordplay.

Before UNIX there was Multics. Multics spent a lot of time on error detection and recovery, and was slow and complex as a result.

UNIX just panics and stops when things go wrong. At least it reboots quickly!

@aka_pugs

Quite a library, I'd love to read some of those books. I'd add...

Computer Engineering: A DEC View of Hardware Systems Design (Oh I love that book... full PDFs available online)

The Multics System: An Examination of Its Structure

📰 Multics

💬 Multics nostalgia mixed with disdain; it's a mixed bag of historical homage and existential dread. 😟

thinking about multics PL/I again: the formal semantics don’t contain the concept storage unit in reference to temporary values. HOWEVER the language reference *does*, so treating the language as if values that exit a statement cannot propagate UB seem OK

Back in 1972, the Multics system review highlighted potential security flaws like backdoors. Fast forward to 2024, and similar threats persist with incidents like the xz attack on Debian's ssh daemon.

#til (or maybe, re-learned?) that Multics not only is still an active project, but can be installed and run (via emulator) on probably the machine you're using to read this.

yes, that Multics. That started in 1964, and "has influenced all modern operating systems since, from microcomputers to […]
