Using MVPA, we could decode super-recognizers from 1 second of brain activity. This decoding peaked spatially in right-hemisphere electrodes, and peaked temporally around the N170 window.

Quite proud of this latest work from the KorbLab, which replicates behavioral effects of zygomaticus activation on happiness categorization, and also reveals an N170 reduction, suggesting reduced visual processing in combination with targeted facial feedback input

Thanks! Yes, in fact, I could see very clearly the effect of lateralisation on some ERPs and their sources. For instance, P1, N170, VAN and EPN when I compared trial data with intact face on the left (and acramble on the righy) vs opposite trial data. But those data weren't relevant for this paper.

People often see outgroup members as looking alike, a misperception tied to reduced identity processing in early vision. White participants showed less neural sensitivity to identity differences among Black faces (outgroup) than among White faces (ingroup), evident in N170 ERPs.

11/12 Finally, our sixth study focused on face-specific neural processing by measuring the N170 component. We found further evidence that, with around 4.4 ms of exposure, the brain could recognise that the stimulus was a face.

Theta activity, often treated as a marker of engagement/attention (in our previous papers and tonnes others!) now suddenly looks like sum of transient fixation-related P1/N170 components. Eg data sections where no FRPs present show strongly attenuated oscillatory activity. 6/8

Politicians’ faces did evoke stronger N170 responses than strangers’ faces, possibly due to affective salience. Yet, we did not observe partisan differences in the P200 or N200 components. This stands in contrast to robust effects reported in studies on racial and minimal group bias.

We linked the mTRF results to well-known brain signals using classic ERP analysis. The first three processes reflect known ERPs:

(I) frontotemporal P50-N100-P200 for sound,
(II) central-lateralized motor potentials for movement initiation, and
(III) occipital N170 for movement observation.

I included lateralisation as a factor in the suppl of those ERPs (e.g., N170), but didn't plot them. Do you have a hypothesis in mind for those lateralised effects? The MVPA of face location (Fig. 4A) is basically decoding info from left vs right screen side, i.e. lateralised response in the EEG.
