What's even worse is at such young ages, being treated so harshly by their own government will foster a deep-seated feeling of "otherhood" - being an outsider in their own country.

The Maternal Otherhood Of Mythematists Will Now Come To Order note to self or whoever else is listening: you dont need me to reflect you—i deflect myself; i’m no bleached agent with secret agendas in my gourds and you don’t need me to protect you / you just need me to knead you / & i want this to be mutual: 1. we gather / casually black / like bureaucrats or small-town laureates / each of us full of extrasensory paternalism, elite externalists chasing boyhood dreams chasing the pursuit of influence and leadership our pimp-strut in lockstep like a learned behavior; the patriotic socialism of an urban gulag but my attempt is to keep my hum penumbral and it is learning to listen / my silhouettes have obdurate angles / my silence is softly adumbrant but in truth, i never know how to hard sell the sideshow that’s inside me 2. The Davises: Helen kept her motherwit razor-sharp; not sassy. just sarcastic. Rother was a soothsayer with sandpaper hands and sawdust that fell like dandruff from his shadow. also sarcastic. sourpusses to outsiders, but just two tragic martyrs on coffee break awaiting sainthood. so from their example i’m an old southern solarium a houngan of the not-so-humble arts so i tend to gimcrack in freeverse giving parables in answer to every mathematic equation: “how many underpaid pragmatists does it take to make a poet?” / in a room full of black metallurgists i beat the brow of Anansi . . . not anvils. mechanics? you want to talk about mechanics?? not a memo, not a meme, not a bestiary . . . —mechanics?!?! i won’t. tho i digitize by trade, it’s the cow-tail switch, not your sheepskin, that holds me in account 3. in a land (oh lord, i sound like a movie trailer) in a land where grown black men (in order to prosper) must be ore / i am a moot militant, a winter’s mote / the summer’s spore. i john-the-conqueroo in complete quiet. so if you are in need of spiritual warmth or well wishes—in those i’m adept—then i’ll watch your back and empower you, that’s a promise! to be proficient in the languages of “black bureaucrat” i learn to barter in currencies of bravado and spotlight, be in brotherhood with mass perception there isn’t, as of yet, proper hugging in the huddle of America’s beautiful black men / so come, bold knights, and let us frolick in the ponds like all heroes of yore with songs in our throats while hand-in-hand—and yes, we still carry pocket knives, for whittle or for worse, but not for (without reason) any random old bloodletting —you’ll find no cinematic savages here / glorifying the curvaceous whorl of conference tables. 4. but here i am, soulspeaking over bourbon; the arms of our ancestors referenced deeply in every sentence, the extroverted offering / the exchange in theories of introspection and black love . . . every conversation meant as embrace. when in the boardroom, my powerpoint of gourds present this: a renewal for camaraderie. for the sharing of chimurenga (in real life or social media)—the pledge by each of us to be as steles in the struggle. to be the heroes our mamas never had until jump back turn around pick a bale of cotton is no longer the expected themesong for black children come bedtime. to walk an island of seashells within the rings of Saturn —protecting joy / praying to ancestors. 5. —The Sacred Oath of the Mythematist— the haters send their hares at me here, i suppose, to take me to Havana or (i shudder) the Hellenic, carrying me towards triage on their tiny cots: me, a black fat blot on their quilts of kale (—my astral sheen & i, one wonders) but i oppose & dream of Ancient Harlem and if you must, you can reroute me through Hazard (if not Harlan) —i am rust and i am woah and i woe but in the roe of me i thunder; tho also i coo oh, shit, how i coo.
