Bithynia is a geographical region of northwest of Asia Minor in West Asia, adjoining the Sea of Marmara, the Bosporus, and the Black Sea. It borders Mysia to the southwest, Paphlagonia to the northeast along the Pontic coast, and Phrygia to the southeast towards the interior of Asia Minor.

Kastamonu (historic Kastamon) in Paphlagonia, associated with the Komnenian dynasty, was where Isaac I Komnenos was proclaimed emperor in 1057. Hüsamettin Çoban, a Seljuk (Turkish) commander, conquered it in the late 13th century.
