I was surprised that it’s been 28 years since I last saw Eastern Subalpine Warbler. On @PortlandBirdObs in the autumn. Seen 4 or 5 of Eastern & Western, but just the one Moltoni’s.

Persistent strongish S to SSW winds all day with variable cloud conditions resulted in only 21 birds ringed all day at [email protected]. 10 Chichaff, 6 Willow Warbler (pic) and 4 Blackcap migrants. Stronger winds this pm not looking better. #birdringing #birds

Volucella zonaria, the hornet mimic hoverfly, @PortlandBirdObs. This is a female, identifiable by the yellow band between the eyes, which is not present in males. The thoracic dorsum (the upper surface of the main section of the thorax) is usu. brown on females & black on males.

I'm certain this grey seal spends its time at Portland Bill watching tourists on the cliffs. I wouldn't be surprised if it had a life list too. After today, it's no doubt ticked off 'small middle-aged women in a big hat and natty grey @PortlandBirdObs hoodie'.

The Giant Tachinid Fly (Tachina grossa) likes the mint flowers here @PortlandBirdObs. Adults feed on pollen & nectar, but the larvae hatch out of eggs laid in moth caterpillars, such as the Oak Egger, & consume their hosts from within. Enjoy your breakfast!
