#lungfish, #Protopterus #annectens wild #albino form. Highly recommended as an emotional support fish for the holidays, travels well, eats just about anything and great listener.

Pez Pulmonado del Oeste de África (Protopterus annectens), preocupación menor.

Estos primitivos peces pueden vivir mucho tiempo sin agua, siempre y cuando tengan la piel húmeda, y moverse por tierra firme arrastrándose.

I honestly thought a Protopterus amphibius would be more following with your theme with those gills

Project Animalia #687
West African lungfish (Protopterus annectens)

A fish that breathes air and waddles on land on primitive limbs, and estivates underground during dry season.

Went to the famous aquarium fish store, Paupau Aqua Garden in Ginza, Tokyo, Japan.

Some interesting species like the gilled lungfish (Protopterus amphibius) among others, and pretty medaka (Oryzias latipes) breeds. I can't really bring any fish back with me, but I did grab some aquarium equipment.

LOL. 2 of them are fish but 2 are amphibians. I couldn't be completely transparent *sneaky sneaky*

Images in order:
A. Coelacanth (Latimeria chalumnae)
B. African lungfish (Protopterus annectens)
C. Mudpuppy (Necturus maculosus)
D. Bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana)

You were soooooo close to perfect! Two are fish but two are amphibians instead of reptiles, which are very similar!

Unfortunately, they are a little bit bigger than beetles. They are all fish or amphibians.

Two are amphibians, which isn't too far off from lizards!

Fish Fact of the Day.

Fast & Not So Furious. During droughts, African Lungishes enter a state of torpor called aestivation within subterranean cocoons where they survive without food or water for up to 4 years before resuming their normal aquatic lives. 🧪

Finally we have the fourth and smallest species of the African lungfishes, the Gilled African Lungfish (Protopterus amphibius).

This species grows to a max size of about 44 cm and often retains gills into adulthood (most African lungfishes lose their gills w/ age).

Here’s a great shot by @joelsartore of the Spotted African Lungfish (Protopterus dolloi).

This species is more elongate and slimmer than other African lungfish species, frequently has more spots too.

Here’s the often more ornately-patterned Marbled African Lungfish (Protopterus aethiopicus).
They have a maximum size of 200 cm!

Let’s take a quick look at the four species of African lungfishes.
Here’s a living specimen of the species in the previous tweet:

Meet “Frank The Tank,” the Marbled African Lungfish (Protopterus aethiopicus), also the star of “Tank Parties” back in grad school.

Guests would gather to watch the unusual feeding behavior (tooth plates seen in earlier post) of this oddball fish 🐟🍽️🐟😬

Me: the three genera of Lungfish faces😗

Australian (Neoceratodus), African (Protopterus), South American (Lepidosiren)

P is for Protopterus, the African lungfishes! #FishABC

These amazing fishes can survive droughts by digging into mud, making a mucus cocoon, and slowing their metabolism (estivation).

When water returns, they are back in action! They can be dormant for over 5 years!

So @Brantromyzon and I decided to do #LivingFossilFriday, here’s my first entry:

The world’s smallest lungfish species, the Gilled African Lungfish, Protopterus amphibius.

This is a young of year fish; they breathe air but still have external gills. Also taste with their fins!
