Yesterday I forgot why I didn't go to the parks this past week, and saw all the fallen branches and trees covering the trails. The saws were buzzing in the background. The main trail was clear, thanks Seattle Parks!

Some nicely branched, blue green fruticose lichens spring out from a bed of moss on these two twigs. There are also some smaller green ones. A variety of foliose lichens in shades of blue gray to powdery blue clasp the twigs. These are lying on bed of brown decaying tree leaves. Another set of twigs, looking very artsy with the tufts of blue green lichens contrasting with the leaves in various shades of brown.

Split gill mushrooms in the rain look like fuzzy sweaters in the wash

A fallen branch covered with gray bark has a small colony of tan split gills (Schizophyllum commune) growing in a patch of green spiky moss. The fungus caps are mostly fan shaped and covered with fine hairs. One has been broken off to show the gill structure underneath the cap, radiating from the center.

Bigleaf maple leaves cover the park lawn. They're layered on top of each other, like a haphazard puzzle. Looking closely, you can see that there are many shades of brown, from light yellow brown, to tan, to orangey brown, to purple brown. There are a few splotches or a blue-white fungal rot. A bright yellow elm tree leaf at the bottom of the photo makes for a sharp contrast.

Bright sunlight pours down between trees with some bright yellow leaves. The thin leaf layer tints the light a pale yellow. Young big leaf maples and cottonwood tree trunks reach upward. The ground and the banks of the creek are covered with a litter of yellow and brown leaves. The creek water is a dark navy blue and hazily reflects the sky and trees. The whole effect is of bright and dark contrasts.

A cluster of bonnet (Mycena galericulata? M. inclinata? ) mushrooms grows on an old log among fallen leaves. The mushrooms are small, with convex grayish-tan caps and slender feet. You can see the striation of the gills through the thin caps. The leaves surrounding the cluster are in shades of yellow, and also spotted with autumnal rot. There is some moss on the log, and a few brown pine needles. These grow everywhere, and are the prototypical LBM. Small brown mushrooms, some species of Mycena or bonnet (M. galericulata or inclinata?), grow on a dark rotting log. They are framed by a brown maple leaf and a yellow-brown oak leaf. There is a bit of green moss poking out from under the leaves.

A small cluster of white fungi with black feet (they look a bit like fingers) poke out of the wood they are decomposing. They're called candlesnuff because they look like the ( inverted) wick of a snuffed candle.

Looking down into Ravenna Creek ravine from the footbridge: off to the right,. Off to the crowns of big leaf maple trees glow yellow and gold above a dark green understory. You can see the gray tree trunks between the leaves. Off to the left a few branches covered with mosses and lichen poke out, framing the top of the photo. There are a couple of craggy snags, and at the bottom a leaf littered trail winding its way next to dark tree trunks. The effect is of a dark rainy morning making everything slightly mysterious and the colors very contrasty.

A small cluster of shiny bright red berries hangs down between dark leather brown leaves on slender twigs Off to the side there is one leaf in shades of yellow and russet. I don't often use presets when not doing artsy stuff, but this moody preset with its old fashioned sepia toned and crepuscular light just grabbed my fancy. So perhaps this is artsy stuff! There is a very thin burnt umber border to complement the photo colors.

Three sizable concrete and mosaic sea turtles make their way across the lawns by the playground in Ravenna Park. I can find absolutely no mention of them, though lots of photos, so I can't give you an artist for these lovelies. Kids do love to climb on them in cool days.

A couple of trusses of pink rhododendron blossoms peek through the Oregon grape and thimbleberry leaves in the upper right quadrant of this photo. The soft pink trumpet-shaped flowers form a pompom of blossoms, a small bouquet. The rhodie leaves which surround the trusses are oval, long and smooth. The Oregon grape leaves are glossy and relatively small, the thimbleberry leaves are large and palmate. There is an abundance of texture contrasts giving a cheerful effect.

Raven and Cooper's Hawk. There was a large gathering of crows making a fuss about Ravens on their turf. The Cooper's swooped in, broke up the party and scattered the crows. Maybe it was protecting kiddos?

Osoberries (Oemleria cerasiformis) in varying stages of ripeness. They turn dark purple when fully ripe. They are edible but don't have much flesh on the pit.

A branch of an osoberry shrub is has several stems of osoberries hanging like cherries below the green oval leaves. Their color varies from greenish yellow to apricot yellow to peach pink. They look like miniature apricots at the end of the red stems, which seem even brighter red when the berries turn purple.

A couple of five petaled pink roses bloom among the green compound leaves of the cluster rose. The shrubs flourish in the dappled shade along the trail. These are sometimes hard to distinguish from the Nootka rose, but the clusters of buds and flowers are typical, whereas the Nootka has mostly solitary flowers. The stems of cluster roses tend to arch more, the Nootka grows fairly straight for several feet before arching.

A well trodden foot trail ambles along the wooded side of the Ravenna Creek ravine, with long afternoon shadows streaked across it. The trees, a mix of big leaf maples and redcedar, are tall and slender, covered with moss that glows in the mid afternoon sun. The underbrush is mostly ferns and horsetails, with a few buttercups dotted here and there. If you look up through the trees, you can see half the iron blue footbridge that spans the ravine, the rest on the right hidden by the trees. You can see part of the spanning arch with its many crosslinks. The arch and footbridge are also mostly hidden by the trees on the right side of the trail. The whole scene is cast in a green light filtered through the dense leaves overhead.

Tightly packed clusters of 5 petaled white flowers grow among the bushes' dark green palmate leaves. The flowers are small and have lots of exserted stamens, which give the clusters a slightly fuzzy look. The anthers are initially pink but are dull brown after the pollen is gone. The leaves have 3 or more lobes and resemble maple leaves.
