Yesterday I was with the Cambs Bryologists at the Devil's Dyke, an Anglo-Saxon causeway of chalk, sometimes reaching 10 m in height next to a deep ditch.
It supports chalk grassland CG3/CG5, with CG5 occupying a holding position between grassland & scrub.

This lovely veteran beech was at the foot of scarp-slope ancient woodland on Chanctonbury Hill SSSI; on the side of the Wiston Bostal. Its roots were covered in Arthonia radiata, Asterisk Lichen; Dicranoweisia cirrata, Common Pincushion; Rhynchostegium confertum Clustered Feather-Moss. #lichen #moss

Correcting my own classification, suspect this looks more like a Rhynchostegium more-so now but there are better moss experts in this world than I who would know for certain.

A symmetrical pattern, well almost; with Clustered feather-moss (Rhynchostegium confertum) and Winter heliotrope (Petasites fragrant). Wall top, Truro.

Here, was found Pelia endiviifolia and much Fissidens taxifolius. In the water, Crataneuron filicinum, and Rhynchostegium riparioides.
Muddy bank with minute shoots of Pohlia melanodon and a Vaucheria species was just visible.

Poorly grown Rhynchostegium riparioides on silty rock in the river. The bases of the Ash trees dripped with Homalia trichomanoides.
Heading uphill through the Ash woodland.
On the base of Ash there was frequently Scapania aspera, a calcicole. The underlobe extends a long way along the stem.

Over to the "Chinese Bridge" where each bridge finial seemed to have a different covering, in this case Dicranoweisia cirrata. The weir below with damp walls covered in Cirriphyllum crassinervium, and wthin the water, a sheet of Rhynchostegium riparioides.
