Yesterday, I watched TOUKI BOUKI, a 1973 movie by pioneering Senegalese filmmaker Djibril Diop Mambéty.

Easily one of the very best movies I have ever watched: outstanding story, shots, acting, editing...and a good movie to pair with F.Cooper's recent piece on "decolonization."

xala Ousmane Sembéne (1975) Sotto l’apparenza di un ricco uomo d’affari senegalese diventato impotente per via di una maledizione si nasconde una riflessione caustica e acuta sull’Africa moderna, dove la tradizione è stata smembrata da anni di sottomissione e la modernità non è altro che il frutto di secoli di colonialismo che non hanno lasciato nient’altro se non povertà e una finta libertà di plastica. Xala racconta proprio questo, di un Senegal che dimentica la sua lingua madre per parlare solo in francese, di uomini d’affari corrotti e senza scrupoli, che si comportano da bianchi, guidano Mercedes, viaggiano con valigette piene di soldi, bevono Coca-Cola e acqua Evian d’importazione. Ousmane Sembéne racconta queste contraddizioni mostrandoci anche l’altra faccia della medaglia, quella dove i mendicanti, i poveri e i malati vengono allontanati dalle strade perché non fanno bene al turismo e dove sono sempre pochi ad arricchirsi, a discapito di tutti gli altri. Il protagonista El Hadjí è il simbolo di tutto questo e la maledizione che lo colpisce è molto più che una semplice erezione mancata: è stato toccato dall’uomo bianco, dal capitalismo e dalla ricchezza e ha distrutto ciò che lo rendeva davvero umano. Xala è un film che usa la satira e la commedia come armi principali ma che sa anche andare dritto al punto con i suoi messaggi: El Hadjí ha perso le sue origini e la sua umanità e finirà per perdere tutto quanto, soldi, mogli, beni materiali, dignità. Xala inizia con i venti del cambiamento e uno sfarzoso matrimonio, ma finisce con un uomo nudo coperto di sputi che cerca di lavare via le sue colpe e quella terribile e ineluttabile maledizione che lo ha colpito.
