I do want to try and get to Enryaku-ji and Hieisan - even if from the Biwa side cablecar and not from #kyoto
Last time had a great view form Shoden-ji - with Hieisan in the distance - what a garden and borrowed landscape use there!

Day 24, Coffee, Curry, Ramen, Amazing Yonezawa Beef, and Friends! A picture of Shoden-ji Temple, a relatively obscure Zen temple in northern Kyoto where David Bowie like to spend his time.

I love natural gardens with lots of flowers, so I've never been particularly impressed with Japanese Zen gardens, karesansui. However, I recently visited Shoden-ji temple in Kyoto, and was deeply moved by its garden. I felt a sense of tranquility and peace while appreciating it.

Shōden-ji bliss. 42 minutes before the bird-helicopter battle of the previous post. 31 March, 2025.

@Doreen32128 it was indeed a blessing to be able to visit Shoden-ji 🙏🏽
That "borrowed landscape" garden is quite something. (As are other things there)

At Shōden-ji this afternoon a helicopter flew over. One of the large resident birds immediately perched itself atop the sakura tree and started taking LOUD countermeasures until this disturber of the peace had passed. It then immediately flew off. 🤣 No way to post the video I took, unfortunately.

Back at Shōden-ji. The most rewarding temple garden in Kyōto.

Historians continue to argue about the authenticity of the ceilings.
The forensic scientist Furuhata Tanemoto (古畑種基 1871-1975) examined Shōden-ji's boards and concluded they were definitely bloodstains, but others have pointed out errors in his work that muddy his findings.

We were entirely alone at some parts of our visit to #Shoden-ji, even in the autumn peak, and it’s stunning.

Next up, I summoned a taxi via Uber to take us to our next temple. I really recommend it in Kyoto for lesser known temples, since it comes with built-in navigation. #JohnDoesJapan

Unlike most #karesansui gardens, which use rocks and mossy mounds to symbolise islands, #Shoden-ji uses azalea bushes in the traditional 7-5-3 arrangement.

It’s really striking, and uses the borrowed landscape technique, bringing the trees and mountains from behind. a #JohnDoesJapan #Kyoto top rec!

We then hopped in a quick taxi to #Shoden-ji in far north Kyoto, which was apparently David Bowie’s favourite temple in #Kyoto.

It’s unknown enough today that our taxi driver needed to put the address into a GPS, and up a long (but not too strenuous for mum, 83, and her walking poles!) stairway.

Want to be entirely alone in David Bowie’s favourite #Kyoto garden at the near-height of autumn leaf visitor season?

Take a taxi out to #Shoden-ji in the north, which uses azaleas instead of rocks in its karesansui garden, with views over trees across the city. #JohnDoesJapan

Estos tablones se encuentran en los templos Genko-an, Yogen-in, Shoden-ji, Myoshin-ji, Hosen-in y Kosho-ji. Como una forma de honrar su sacrificio.
