My first exposure to 3d modeling was waaay back when on LightWave 3D (Amiga) and then SoftImage (Indigo2).

Been getting over a bump in the road. I use to use Softimage for my 3d work for Secondlife. That was like eight years ago when the program was nuked. I had been dragging my feet to learn blenders uvmaping. tho where my mind has been. its been easier to teach myself stuff. 1/?

Autodesk fucked that product in every orrifice. We were also the Softimage reseller until Autodesk bought them too. And Mudbox. And Motion Builder. And now I’m feeling sad again.

アマプラで「仮面ライダークウガ」を復習している。平成から令和へ連綿と続くシリーズを確立させた金字塔。作品のコンセプトも物語の構成も良くできているが、四半世紀も前の作品がゆえか、細かい所で気になる点がたくさんある。意味もなく演者を照らす強い光源の反射光。不安な状況を表現する演出だと分かっていても、意識がそっちに向いてしまうほど映像ノイズになってしまっている。あれはダメだ。それと、粘度の高い演出。そこはサクッと進めていいんじゃない?という場面にたっぷり時間をかけているのでテンポが悪い。CGの品質については言及しない。エンディングに「SOFTIMAGE」の文字をみつけてそっと涙する。でも好き。

One of the most unforgivable things Autodesk did was discontinue Softimage, a legendary 3D package that left Maya and Max in the dust. I like to think Softimage's freethinking and innovative approach lives on in Blender.
Blender is struggling. it's the best piece of 3d software on the market, and it's free. I'm not going back to autodesk.

Listen the last 3D animation program I used was SoftImage XSI and adding subdivisions would bluescreen PCs.

It's been a minute.

Never mind over night renders and fighting other classmates for multiple PCs to find out the next day 1 of 3 PCs worked.

I wish every 3D program had the feature of being Softimage. Lightwave's spin quad would be useful in a lot of cases too.

I've spent the day installing all my apps to my pc just to get back on my feet and i've seen the news that NgSkinTools(Which i was using to rig X) has been acquired by Autodesk, Really hope they don't destroy it like they did with Softimage/XSI.

I can't STRESS ENOUGH how phases 1-2 is the best way to learn their pipeline!

The storyboards are fast, there's 2d and 3d animatics for 19-2000 + Rock the House, so many mistakes that breaks the illusion, and a wayback machine site telling us the tools that El Manana used (primarily AE + Softimage)

Totally agree. At CN we had Maya mainly as our 3D tool, but initially we started with Lightwave and Softimage, with Cinema 4D / Infini-D for its integration with After Effects and 3DS for its interoperability with Flame suites. There’s no such thing as a “standard”

Tools change and programs die after being “industry standard” all the time. Dose it stop being standard? Some people still use bloody Softimage 3D somehow.

That little Indy was probably $20,000. The software people were licensing for it was probably more than the cost of the machine - eg. Wavefront, SoftImage etc.
