rxResource doesn't have an "initialValue" and inside the loader you can't use something like "startWith", because only the first emission of the observable is used. So the initial value will always be undefined.
The whole Resouce API is in experimental state, so maybe we will see some refinements.

I use a variation of exhaustMap to implement an "autosave while typing" (the first and the last value of exhaustMap are handled), but for retrieving data I use switchMap in this kind of way (simplified).
