#Stonewort
Rare plants often turn up in restored Norfolk farm #ponds: Translucent Stonewort (Nitella translucens), Tassel Stonewort (Tolypella intricata), Bladder Sedge (Carex vesicaria) & Marsh Speedwell (Veronica scutellata). Very special species usually confined to nature reserves

It's cold and the lakes are freezing around here. I'm missing being out on the water and checking out the aquatic plants on this #MacrophyteMonday. Anyone have any nice aquatic plant photos to share to green up my feed?

I went to WWT Arundel today, ostensibly on a punt to see if Holly-leaved Naiad was visible. It wasn't, but I did see masses of Floating Pennywort Hydrocotyle ranunculoides which is a worry. Also a Stonewort Chara sp. in the Hawaiian Goose inclosure, unidentified. @bsbibotany.bsky.social

🌊The diversity of native aquatic plant communities makes them more able to resilient to climate change than the invasive alga, starry stonewort, which may lessen the impacts of invasion👇

This fen creation trial by the High Batts team at Pennycroft Quarry is hopefully the start of something much bigger. It's survived a mammoth river flood and prolonged inundation. Adjoining open water is crystal clear and dominated by stonewort beds, suggesting ideal conditions for calcareous fen.

Final day of the BSBI ASM, and for me a trip to Selkirk Common. Found a very distinctive stonewort growing in standing water with fen pondweed. If confirmed as hedgehog stonewort as suggested by @bramblebotanist.bsky.social then this will be only the 3rd site for the species in Scotland!
