The employees knew where the EXITS were. The audience did not.

Never block your EXIT signs, doors, or pathways.

Of the over 2000 people in the Iroquois at the time of the fire (audience, show employees), over 600 audience members were killed, and just 1 cast member (who was trapped on a flying rig over the stage). Even the pit orchestra escaped. #TheatreFireSafety

Current Chicago FD would have a similar response time as 1903 FD, due to traffic patterns. Same firehouse location, travel path & distance. #TheatreFireSafety

The fire, & deaths, were the result of blatant disregard of EXISTING fire laws. The same laws your theatre may be violating today.

(While new laws were developed as a result of the fire, most of the laws we have today existed at the time of the fire.) #TheatreFireSafety

Hold please. At this moment 122 years ago, 602 men, women, and children were killed in the Iroquois Theatre fire. #LestWeForget #DimTheLights #TheatreFireSafety

Lest we forget, the worst theatre fire in history occurred 121 years ago today during a matinee at the Iroquois Theatre in Chicago. #TheatreFireSafety

No TD, PM, SM, or Producer has the authority to override fire codes/laws. It is NEVER ok to block exits or fire safety devices. #TheatreFireSafety

Today's Theatre Fire Safety Tip: Inspect ground-row lighting before each show. Make sure drops, scrim, & any debris is clear. #TheatreFireSafety

As such, "2 hours" should be assumed only as ignition point, not "will block a working fire from spreading for 2 hours." #TheatreFireSafety
December 28, 2025 at 11:06 PM
A "2 hour" fire protection rating is based on a 2 hour slow temperature rise to the rated temperature in a lab. Real fires reach the highest rated temps in minutes. #TheatreFireSafety

Violating a fire code/law because ”we’ve been doing it for years?” Ask yourself if you are willing to tell that to a jury. #TheatreFireSafety

Don't assume that "someone else" will take care of a fire hazard. #TheatreFireSafety in the theatre you're working in is YOUR responsibility.

The fire lane(s) at your theatre are not for deliveries, load-in/load-out, overflow parking, or valet parking. #TheatreFireSafety

Never store paint in or under stage or house areas, nor stair/hallways. Store in room outside the walls of theatre space. #TheatreFireSafety

The "area of refuge" is not for storage of props, costumes, scenery, or anything else. Blocking it makes it harder to exit: the last thing you want in an emergency situation.

That little open area just next to exit doors (on the side the door swings open to)?

That's an "area of refuge."

It's there to give space to get out of the way of the opening door. Not merely space for the door to open: for a person to be clear of the door.

Ask those that have worked at your venue for a while if there was ever a fire there. Now ask them if they expected it. #TheatreFireSafety

Sprinkler pipes are only for sprinklers. They are not lighting positions, rigging points, or tie-off points: EVER. #TheatreFireSafety

The fire department is your LAST line of defense for #TheatreFireSafety. Don’t make their job harder by blocking standpipes or access points.

Running hose lines into a theatre is time consuming. Standpipes & FD connection points exist to get water on a fire faster. #TheatreFireSafety

By time most fires activate automatic alarms, they're past point of being able to be extinguished by a handheld extinguisher. #TheatreFireSafety

Why follow all #TheatreFireSafety laws to prevent, extinguish, & contain a fire? Because by the time the fire department arrives, it may be too late.
December 24, 2025 at 5:04 PM
Time spent searching for an extinguisher is time a fire is growing. Don't block or move extinguishers due to scenery. #TheatreFireSafety

An ABC rated fire extinguisher is capable of fighting a small fire of nearly any type. But it needs to be accessible.

Keep ABC rated extinguishers in the 4 corners of your stage: USL, USR, DSL, & DSR.
