#TransSiberian#Railway
Reminds me of that traveller from Bern area going on the Transsiberian Railway. To go to Beijing, he had to get half a dozen tickets.

To get back they asked him to where, and he mumbled Bern Bümpliz. The ticket agent then asked Bümpliz Nord or Bümpliz Süd…

I’ve been reading the bit about the Russian Civil War in Christian Wolmar’s history of the Transsiberian Railway, and all I can say is that I don’t think an eldritritch horror of the kind conjured by @cstross.bsky.social would have occasioned any comment at all.

Tks ;) I was there autumn 1989, first week still curfew, questioned by a civil clothed police as I talked with students for three hours (carefully!) in a park. Saw people/criminals before they were shot. TransSiberian Railway there, 3 days in Moscow. Scary countries already then!

Mobsters on the Transsiberian Railway.

Rackets, theft and duels in the corridor coaches. Businessmen becoming ex-businessmen. All that kind of thing.

Dams are very strong & sturdy targets. They would require a very large number of hits by #OWA #drones.
Less strong, but vitally important (for #logistics) the bridges of the #TransSiberian railway…

Whether "transgender", "transgenic", "transatlantic" he reacts only on the prefix "trans". If Putin invites him for a trip on the Transsiberian railway he will take it as an offence.

Remember how much civilian trade that is going back and forth, and right now the US and the Houthi's may shut down transportation of cargo at any time.
We need a land route that way.
And that means an alternate to the Transsiberian Railway.

i wanted to travel to australia & hear the stories of the oldest human societies; i wanted to take the transsiberian railway from moscow to vladivostok; i wanted to go on a hike w/ a yamabushi & participate in a cleansing ritual.

i want to return to the dirt. i want to return to the soil, alive.

It was Lenin himself who signed an order that whole settlements whose inhabitants didn’t clear the Transsiberian Railway of snow in a timely manner were shot and replaced by others.

It has been a very long time of oppression without morals.

#OTD in 1904 the 1st #TransSiberian railway was completed, running over 4,600miles from #Moscow to #Vladivostok via Manchuria (in 1916 a line running wholly through Russian territory via Khabarovsk would be completed) after 13 years of construction.

A few often heard arguments answered:

• Long distance electrification is not possible: The Transsiberian Railway is fully electrified… is that long enough?
• Heavy haul is not possible: One of the heaviest heavy hauler is in South Africa and haules 40'000 ton trains … electric, on narrow gauge

Uh-oh, that's completly different set of problems there. Transsiberian railway is one giant bottleneck, in regards to modern logistic operations.
