CJA Submits Public Letter with 17 EJ Orgs to Oppose Handouts to Polluting Industries

Trump’s EPA is making moves to make it legal and easier for corporations and industry to pollute waterbodies and wetlands. We firmly oppose these attempts by big business & corporate actors to buy out Washington.

As usual the Highland Winter Bird Race last weekend was interesting to see distributions after the big freeze. With all waterbodies on east coast frozen only a single Whooper Swan was seen. First time I’ve seen Coots on the sea!. Weird absence of Great Northern Divers too, anyone else noticing that?

Freshwater life depends on networks of habitats 💧

It’s time to stop thinking about waterbodies in isolation and start focusing on whole freshwater landscapes says our CEO @jeremybiggs.bsky.social.

The tench, a Eurasian freshwater fish, has colonized many waterbodies around the world, including the St. Lawrence River.

One trait that likely contributed to the tench's invasion success is its broad environmental tolerance. Here is a classic example from Kennedy & Fitzmaurice (1970) #bioinvasions

Some to landfill, some fly-tipped, some composted at green waste site (best option); have also heard of a project that places them in waterbodies as zooplankton/fish refuge (even better option, but not to be confused with fly-tipping!)

Government gaming the numbers by granting sweeping exemptions to hundreds of waterbodies. Handy stroke of the pen for the Minister before Christmas, giving himself less work to do next year protecting rivers. Nice 👏👏👏
Despite nearly 1000 of you making submissions to halt the weakening of environmental standards for 1 in 10 of our rivers and lakes the govt signed off on it! 😥

This, without the evidence that such a drastic move was either necessary or justified. It is unacceptable.

This was then followed today by the announcement that the Government had decided to designate a vast swathe of our rivers as heavily modified, meaning they don't have to reach the same high standards as other waterbodies under the WFD. Legal bar lowering in action.

It's just over 3 weeks since Ireland was found in breach by the ECJ for failing to protect waterbodies from physical damage. The government response? Lower the legal bar for these waterbodies, so the damage can continue, with insufficient justification.

Our waterways are not in safe hands.

Although applying rock salt on roadways, parking lots, and sidewalks helps to ensure the safety of those traveling by vehicle or foot, overuse of salt can be costly for consumers, degrade infrastructure, contaminate runoff that enters streams and waterbodies, and impact drinking water.

Govt launches Mission Watershed PUNARUTTHAN in Nagaland to revive waterbodies
On December 8, officials in New Delhi announced the launch of State‑Level Watershed Mahotsav 2025 and Mission Watershed PUNARUTTHAN at Naga Solidarity Park in Kohima. The initiative intends to rejuvenate traditional water bodies, rehabilitate damaged lands, and strengthen rainwater‑harvesting infrastructure, an official said. The mission’s goal is to secure livelihoods through community involvement and by dovetailing with programmes such as MGNREGA, the Ministry of Rural Development noted.
