I’m not sure why you raised this example. Nowhere in the documentary do they say that Wodaabe men are acting as, or pretending to be, women. Quite the opposite in fact. Their beauty standards are just different from ours. So this culture doesn’t seem to tell us anything about performative gender.

2/2 there've always been people who wore unconventional clothing, cross-dressers, and so on. Social conventions have varied over time and place. Men wore curly wigs, women wore trousers.
