"Hasn't zero been around forever?"
"How long is forever…So you think that zero was there waiting for us when humans came into being…You should have more respect for human progress. We made the zero, through great pain and struggle."

On the paper he had written a single line, one simple formula:
e^(π i)+ 1 = 0
No one spoke. The widow's fingernails had ceased their tapping. Her eyes…now looked at me with a calm, understanding gaze, and I could tell then that she knew the beauty of math.

"Yes…” he said, pointing at his chest. “It's in here. It's the most discreet sort of number,so it never comes out where it can be seen. But it's here." We fell silent for a moment, trying to picture the square root of minus one in some distant, unknown place.

O museu do silêncio -Yoko Ogawa

Gosto demais do desconforto estranho que a Ogawa provoca. Demorou a engatar, mas foi bom que só.

Frase: Lia a sorte pelas letras que as pessoas pressionavam ao testar as máquinas de escrever.

Yoko Ogawa – The Memory Police (1994). Dystopian fable translated from Japanese. A young woman observes the Memory Police removing objects, one at a time, to leave a barren island without any culture or hope. A condemnation of authoritarianism, more relevant than ever. #YokoOgawa

The Memory Police by Yōko Ogawa
4/5⭐️

This story is an exploration of how memories shape your identity and the importance of preserving history, stories, and art in an authoritarian state.

The Japanese title of this book is Quiet Crystallization, which I prefer, as that’s what the book is really about: people forgetting until they forget that they’ve forgotten. A novel that has stuck with me. Critical reading for our times. #yokoogawa #japaneseliterature #novel #dystopia #covid

Just finished reading Yoko Ogawa's 'The Diving Pool', a collection of three novellas. The first two stories were underwhelming. The 3rd story was gripping till the end, but the ending was disappointing. My review is here.

Just finished reading Yoko Ogawa's 'Revenge', a collection of 11 interconnected stories. The mood is sombre, gloomy, dark. The connections between the stories are fascinating. My review is here.
